A steel cord is formed by compactly twisting steel filaments together, the steel filaments including a plurality of zigzag filaments and optionally a nonzigzag filament, the zigzag filament being zigzaged two-dimensionally and made up of straight segments each extending between the zigzag peak points, the nonzigzag filament being straight. In case the cord is composed of only the zigzag filaments, the zigzag filaments include at least two kinds of zigzag filaments having different zigzag pitch lengths. In case the cord is composed of both the zigzag filaments and nonzigzag filaments, some of the zigzag and nonzigzag filaments are first loosely twisted together into a bunch, and then a plurality of bunches are twisted together into the cord. In any case, the zigzag pitch length and zigzag wave height of each zigzag filament are substantially constant along the length thereof. A Tire comprises a reinforcing layer such as a tread reinforcing belt layer, carcass, bead reinforcing layer and the like made of the above-mentioned steel cords.

A reinforcement ply for an elastomeric article comprises a plurality of parallel extensible reinforcing members laid at a substantially constant end count perpendicular to their longitudinal direction, the ply having different extensibilities in the longitudinal direction of the reinforcing members in different parts of the ply. The reinforcing members are preferably made such that they each have at least one filament which is displaced perpendicularly from the longitudinal centerline of the reinforcing member in one part of the reinforcing member compared to another part. A tire may include the reinforcement ply as a hoop or band in the ground contacting tread region.
Abstract:
A steel cord effective for reinforcing a super-large off-road tire wherein strands made by simultaneously twisting together 3 to 6 steel wires in the same twisting direction with the same pitch length are used and the steel cord is made by twisting together 3 to 6 such strands in the same direction as the twisting direction of the strands and with the same pitch length. Each of the steel wires constituting the strands continuously has a small wavy pattern of a pitch length smaller than the lay length of the strands and therefore each of the strands has a compound pattern comprising a wavy pattern formed by the twisting and said small wavy pattern and in a gap is formed between steel wires each of the strands by the small wavy pattern. The lay length P.sub.1 of the steel cord is 8 to 15 times the steel cord diameter D and the elongation on breakage by tension of the steel cord is over 5%.
