Abstract:
A powder coating composition comprises a component (A) containing carboxylic acid or anhydride functionality and a component (B) containing hydroxy functionality. The components (A) and (B) are both solids at temperatures up to 50.degree. C. and at least one of them is a synthetic resin having a glass transition temperature in the range 0.degree. to 120.degree. C. The carboxylic acid or anhydride-functional component (A) is a compound or polymer containing at least two cyclic carboxylic anhydride groups per molecule or is a compound containing a moiety of the formula: ##STR1## where X is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group, or a cyclic anhydride thereof. The hydroxy-functional component (B) contains at least two hydroxy groups per molecule and contains at least one amine group in its molecule to catalyze the reaction of the carboxylic acid or anhydride groups of component (A) with the hydroxy groups of component (B). The composition is prepared by mixing the ingredients, extruding them at a temperature above the glass transition temperature of at least one of the components but below the fusion temperature, and comminuting the extrudate. The composition is applied to substrates and heated to cause fusion and reaction of the ingredients to cure the coating layer formed.
Abstract:
A resinous composition for coating use which is excellent in weather resistance and in low temperature curing properties, comprising a resin having resinous acid value based on carboxyl groups derived from its constituting tetrachlorophthalic acid of 2 to 8, a resinous acid value based on sulfonic acid groups derived from its constituting sulfophthalic acid of 0.5 to 5, and a functional group capable of reacting with a crosslinking agent to be compounded with the resin. The present resin is useful, in the combination form with a crosslinking agent, as a resinous vehicle of a coating composition which is excellent in curing properties, weather resistance, pigment dispersibility and storage stability and is specifically useful as an intermediate or top coat paint for automobile bodies or the like.
Abstract:

The anhydride component is derived from a mixture of monomers comprising greater than or equal to 11 percent by weight of an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid anhydride, the balance of the mixture comprised of at least one vinyl comonomer. The molar ratio of the vinyl comonomer to the carboxylic acid anhydride in the mixture should be at least 1.0:1.0 and the ratio should be sufficient to provide a color standard number of less than 150. Typically, the coating composition is in the form of a two-package composition. Also disclosed is a method of coating comprising: (I) coating a substrate with one or more applications of a pigmented basecoating composition to form a basecoat, and (II) coating the basecoat with one or more applications of a transparent topcoating composition to form a transparent topcoat, in which the basecoating composition and/or the topcoating composition comprises the aforesaid non-yellowing coating composition.

Abstract:
A composition suitable for forming surface coatings, laminates or composite materials formed by bringing together:(a) a first polymer containing carboxylic acid, anhydride or acid chloride groups,(b) an amine or alcohol or a derivative thereof which is a tertiary amine, a ketimine, an acetal or an oxazolidine and(c) a second polymer capable of cross-linking with the first polymer in the presence of the amine or alcohol. The components may be initially in two packs and either mixed prior to application or sprayed onto the surface simultaneously from separate nozzles. The surface coatings are particularly suitable for coating surfaces which are otherwise difficult to coat and protect and may be applied to wet or rusted surfaces without surface preparation.

Abstract:
A coating of a film-forming material is applied without electricity to a metal by immersing the metal in an aqueous dispersion which contains a film-forming material cationically dispersed in a cationic dispersion which contains a carboxylic acid radical capable of reacting with metal ions obtained by etching the metal to form a negatively charged complex in the dispersion.
Abstract:
A water reducible resin composition, a water reducible admixture of such resin with solvents and plasticizers, a water reduced form of such mixture suitable for a coating, and a coating prepared from such water reduced mixture. Said resin is required to be prepared from a balance of hydrophobic enhancing and hydrophilic enhancing monomers. Generally such hydrophobic enhancing monomers are required to be a balance of monomers promoting hard and soft segments of the resin.
