    摘要: Very low molecular weight polymers are sometimes used in toners which are designed for high speed printers and copiers. It is extremely difficult to prepare polymers having the ultra-low molecular weights required in such applications by standard emulsion polymerization techniques. By utilizing the techniques of this invention, the molecular weight of polymers made by conventional emulsion polymerization can be reduced to a very low level. This invention more specifically discloses a process for preparing a low molecular weight polymer which is particularly useful as a toner resin, which comprises (1) treating an emulsion of a polymer having a number average molecular weight which is within the range of about 18,000 to about 40,000 and which is comprised of repeat units which are derived from about 65 to about 95 weight percent of a vinyl aromatic monomer, from about 1 to about 12 weight percent of a conjugated diene monomer, and optionally from about 1 to about 34 weight percent of an alkyl acrylate monomer, with ozone in an amount and under conditions which are sufficient to reduce the number average molecular weight of the polymer to within the range of about 3,000 to about 15,000; and (2) recovering the polymer from the emulsion.

    摘要: This invention relates to a thixotropic thickening agent and to a process for preparing the same. Such thixotropic thickening agents are particularly useful for thickening water reducible coatings. The thixotropic thickening agents of this invention are copolymers which are comprised of repeat units which are derived from methacrylic acid monomer, ethylacrylate monomer, and a water soluble crosslinking agent. The water soluble crosslinking agents which can be used include ethylene glycol dimethacrylate and alkylene bisacrylamides, such as N,N'-methylene bisacrylamide. A neutralized two weight percent aqueous solution of the thixotropic thickening agents of this invention will have a Brookfield RVT viscosity as measured at 50 rpm using a number 3 spindle within the range of 50 to 2000 centipoise (cps).

    摘要: Pure syndiotactic 1,2-polybutadiene is a thermoplastic resin which has double bonds attached in an alternating fashion to its polymeric backbone. Films, fibers and molded articles can be made utilizing syndiotactic 1,2-polybutadiene. It can also be blended into rubbers and cocured therewith. Syndiotactic 1,2-polybutadiene can be made by solution, emulsion or suspension polymerization. It typically has a melting point which is within the range of about 195.degree. C. to about 215.degree. C. However, it is often desirable for the syndiotactic 1,2-polybutadiene to have a melting point of less than about 195.degree. C. This invention discloses a process for preparing syndiotactic 1,2-polybutadiene having a melting point of less than about 195.degree. C. which comprises: polymerizing 1,3-butadiene monomer in an aqueous medium in the presence of (1) a catalyst composition which is made by reacting (a) at least one cobalt compound (b) at least one organoaluminum compound, and (c) at least one conjugated diene; (2) carbon disulfide; and (3) N,N-dibutylformamide. This invention further discloses that catalyst emulsion compositions made utilizing amino acid soaps, such as sodium lauroyl sarcosinate, have much better stability than those made with standard surfactants.
