To produce an absorption body, a mold having an air-permeable bottom is filled progressively with airborne fibers of absorbent material and subpressure is applied through the air-permeable mold bottom. This subpressure is varied progressively and directly as the thickness of the absorption body progressively increases as the mold is progressively filled with fibers. Thus, the amount of air drawn through the absorption body by the subpressure remains substantially constant despite progressive increase in the thickness of the body. The result is an absorption body having substantially constant density throughout its thickness.

A method and apparatus for incorporating a powder into a continuous fibrous web containing multiple corrugations. In the method, a fibrous web provided with multiple parallel corrugations is continuously passed over a curved surface having an arc with a radius to web thickness ratio of 0.5-3 and the corrugations are opened at their upper side. While any bonded fibers connecting adjacent corrugations together are broken apart. A powder having 50-1000 micron particle size is deposited by gravity into the opened spaces between adjacent corrugations of the web. The deposited powder is then compacted into the fibrous corrugated web by rubbing with a pad moved in an oscillating motion generally perpendicular to the corrugations. The powder filled web is bent in the opposite direction around a roller to break the fibers between the corrugations on the opposite side of the web. The second roller can be made vertically movable so as to convert the web continuous forward motion to an intermittent forward motion.

A flexible, air permeable composite highly effective as a highly absorbent fiber filter, suitable for high throughput, low pressure drop applications. The composites and filters use a non-woven fabric substrate, in conjunction with organic polymer fibers, such as polypropylene fibers, formed in-situ from a solvent solution of the polymer, with solid particles such as carbon particles interstitially positioned within the mass, and forming a unique microstructure by the interaction of the flexible non-woven fibers and the polymer fibers. A method of entrapping small sorptive particles within such filters is also provided.

The disclosure relates to the production of a mineral fiber product for example to replace asbestos fibers in different products. In the method of production, at most 7% by weight of mineral fibers is dispersed in water which contains a wetting agent, undispersible material being then separated and the dispersion being then mechanically dewatered to a dry content of from 30 to 70% by weight and a fiber density of from 200 to 400 kg/m.sup.3. In a subsequent, separate stage, the fibers are redispersed in water substantially without the addition of wetting agent, are provided with possible additives such as cellulose fibers, are shaped, dewatered and dried.

A wet-laid fibrous product is provided that comprises recycled cellulosic fibers, cellulose ester staple fibers, and residual recycled ink, where the fibrous product has less ink content compared to the ink content for a 100% cellulose comparative fiber wet-laid product, when processed under similar conditions. The wet-laid fibrous product can be formed from a deinked recycled paper pulp slurry, the pulp slurry comprising recycled cellulosic fibers, cellulose ester staple fibers, and ink. A deinking process for the slurry is also provided.
