A pair of pipes 5 introduce ambient air into the discharge region of the muffler. A constricted discharge opening 41 of the body 2 encircles the pipes 5 and confine helical vanes 51 which impart a helical path to the exhaust gases just before mixing with ambient air from the pipes 5. A venturi section 6 with a bell shaped outlet 62 completes the tailpipe section 4. An auxiliary air inlet 43 to the venturi 6 adds additional ambient air to the final outlet via ports 63. In an additional embodiment (FIG. 8), the venturi section 113 is within the muffler body 100. A constricted tube 121 provides a direct path for a portion of the exhaust gases while the major quantity of exhaust gases traverse the helical paths defined by the vanes 123.

    摘要: An exhaust emission control apparatus for treating the exhaust of an internal combustion engine by a combined electrostatic force and cyclone centrifugal force acting together to remove solid particulates. Electrostatically generated ozone reacts with the exhaust gases to reduce them to Co and to oxidize them to harmless gases. Exhaust enters a cyclone chamber, passing through an electrode having many small pointed openings. Air is injected into the cyclone chamber to create a centrifugal flow of the air and exhaust. The electrode charges the solid particulate in the exhaust which then move toward the outer boundary of the cyclone chamber and toward a solid particulate collector. Ozone is generated near the electrode for reacting with the exhaust gases. The air and exhaust gases in the cyclone chamber are ionized in the cyclone chamber and react as the exhaust flows through the cyclone chamber and the muffler chamber to deodorize and purify the exhaust. The exhaust control apparatus includes a muffler chamber concentrically surrounding a cyclone chamber which concentrically surrounds an exhaust inlet pipe.

    摘要: A rotating particulate trap is disclosed, which may find application in diesel engines, air conditioning systems, industrial air-filters and the like. The invention includes a disk or cylinder which is formed from material suitable for filtering particulates which are present in the exhaust gases of diesel engines, gas turbines, industrial air or other particulate laden gases. The disk is mounted transversely in the exhaust duct of a diesel engine and in a fresh air duct which is disposed parallel to the exhaust duct. As the disk rotates within the exhaust duct, it filters particulates from the exhaust gases of the diesel engine. The filtered particulates are expelled from the disk by fresh air blowing in the air duct as the disk rotates within the air duct. The fresh air is blown in the air duct in a direction opposite to the flow of exhaust gases within the exhaust duct by a fan or compressor or compressed air jets. The counterflow arrangement of fresh air and combustion gases enhances the effectiveness of particulate removal as the disk rotates between the exhaust duct and the fresh air duct. Particulates expelled from the disk are blown into a filter bag which is attached to the end of the fresh air duct.

    摘要: A muffler for a portable engine for a chain saw or the like including separable dish shaped members having mating peripheral edges which, when interfitted one within the other, form a hollow shell. Exhaust gas inlet and outlet openings are formed in an end wall of one of the members and a deflector member is mounted exterior of the shell and is adapted to redirect the flow of exhaust gas leaving the muffler outlet openings so that the exhaust gas flows generally in the same direction as engine cooling air flow over the engine and the muffler. A shield is mounted on the shell and has a major portion spaced from the muffler shell to form a cooling air flow passage. The separable shell members, deflector, shield and a tubular diffuser disposed within the shell are held in assembled relationship on the engine by removable threaded fasteners. An engine cooling air shroud is arranged to provide for mixing of cooling air with exhaust gases passing out of the muffler before the mixture passes through an outlet opening formed by the shroud.
