In one of the preferred forms, the friction ring (252) includes peripheral gear teeth (256) in slideable gearing relation with gear teeth (250) formed in the housing (62) and is formed of fiber brake material to act as a dampener between the friction disc (28) and the housing (62) to absorb torsional vibration.

By selective engagement of the friction disc portions (12, 212), the hub (20) will be rotated on the shaft (24) at either the rotational speed of the first sheave (50) or the second sheave (250). In another form, a second, friction disc portion (112) is rotatably mounted on a reciprocal piston (100) and rotatable relative to the hub (20). Planetary gears (114) are rotated intermediate and in gearing relation between a sun gear (96) fixed on the shaft (24) and an annulus (124) fixed to the hub (20). The second, friction disc portion (112) is reciprocal between a first position rotatably related to a facing (152) secured to the sheave (50) opposite to the facing (52). By selective engagement of the friction disc portions (12, 112), the hub (20) will be rotated on the shaft (24) at either the rotational speed of the sheave (50) or at a rotational speed different than the sheave (50) and specifically at a rotational speed dependent on the ratio of the planetary drive.

A friction coupling apparatus contains a plurality of fluid motor actuators circumferentially fixed about a relatively rotatable shaft. Each of the actuators is positioned between a spaced pair of friction rotors fixed to the shaft for rotation therewith. The actuators each contain an annular axially distensible elastomeric air tube, which upon pressurization operates to force pairs of friction members against the rotors for establishing frictional communication between the shaft and a relatively fixed support member. In a preferred embodiment, the elastomeric air tube contains a pair of axially spaced apertures. Each aperture defines a circumferential sealing edge by which one of a pair of air pistons is supported. Each piston contains a circumferential groove which sealingly mates with one of the edges, the pistons positioned to bear directly against the friction members.

A plurality of circumferentially disposed Ushaped resilient pincher-like retraction springs each comprises parallel first and second leg portions connected together by an intermediate portion. The springs are arranged to have each first leg portion engage the piston to urge it towards its retracted position and away from the pressure plate. In one embodiment of this invention, employing a single piston, the second leg portion of the spring engages in a recess formed on a housing having the piston mounted therein. In a second embodiment, employing two back-to-back pistons each positioned adjacent to a friction disc, each leg portion of the spring engages a respective one of the pistons to urge them towards each other.
