摘要: A radiation-curable prepolymer of a polyurethane endtipped with an hydroxy (acrylate or methacrylate) is disclosed. The polyurethane is derived from the reaction of a polyfunctional isocyanate with a hydrolyzable oligomer of an anhydrous cyclic ester of an hydroxy acid. Crosslinked polymers prepared by irradiating the prepolymers are also disclosed. The crosslinked polymers are bioabsorbable and biocompatible with bodily tissue, yet still maintain the outstanding mechanical properties one would expect from a polyurethane. The prepolymers and crosslinked polymers are especially well-suited for the fabrication of surgical devices, particularly wound closure devices such as surgical staples and clips, in a stereolithography apparatus.

摘要: Synthetic filaments composed of homopolymers and copolymers of poly(alkylene oxalates) are absorbable in animal tissue with minimal adverse tissue reaction. Polymers prepared by reacting a dialkyl oxalate with an alkylene diol are melt spun and drawn to obtain oriented fibers having good tensile properties and a high level of flexibility and softness. The filaments are particularly useful in the preparation of surgical prosthesis comprising woven or knitted fabrics and meshes. Other absorbable surgical devices including films and molded items may also be prepared from the disclosed polymer.

摘要: Absorbable copolyoxalate polymers having isomorphic sequences are formulated with drugs and introduced into the body to provide a slow, sustained release of the drug over an extended period of time in accordance with the rate of absorption of the polymer. The copolyoxalate polymers are derived from mixtures of cyclic and linear diols, each having the same number of carbon atoms. The polymers are biodegradable in animal tissue and absorb with minimal adverse tissue reaction.

摘要: Exoskeletal devices or sleeves that can be used with the delivery tube of an applicator device to help dispense fluids, typically flowable biocompatible materials such as hemostatic agents, adhesives, or sealants, onto specific sites in the human body for a medical reason are disclosed. The exoskeletal devices or sleeves are rigid, pre-shaped, and snappably or slidably affixed to the delivery tube. The exoskeletal devices or sleeves do not come into contact with the flowable biocompatible fluid being dispensed, and they can be placed at any position along the delivery tube to address different application situations. Once the exoskeletal device or sleeve is in place, it can optionally be locked onto the delivery tube to prevent further sliding under stresses when pushed against tissue. Multiple exoskeletal devices or sleeves can also be used to achieve more complicated shapes for hard-to-reach anatomical sites.
