Abstract: Methods and apparatus to form venting channels on a panel for a decorative layer are disclosed. An example method includes contacting an outer surface of a tool to an outer resin layer of a panel. The outer surface of the tool has protrusions. The example method includes moving the outer surface of the tool on the outer resin layer of the panel in a first direction to cause the protrusions of the tool to form first venting channels on the outer resin layer of the panel and coupling a decorative layer to the outer resin layer of the panel via an adhesive layer. The first venting channels are to vent at least one of gas or vapor away from the decorative layer to deter separation of a portion of the decorative layer from the outer resin layer.

Abstract: A method and system for detecting moisture in a composite sandwich panel for an aerospace vehicle. A pulse of an electromagnetic radiation beam is beam steered to the composite sandwich panel. The pulse of the electromagnetic radiation beam has a number of wavelengths that is absorbed by water molecules. The timing of the pulse of the electromagnetic radiation beam is synchronized to heat the composite sandwich panel with a time window in an infrared detector system to detect an amount of infrared radiation. The amount of infrared radiation in the composite sandwich panel is detected within the time window for the infrared detector system when the composite sandwich panel is heated by the pulse of the electromagnetic radiation beam, wherein the amount of infrared radiation indicates a level of moisture in the composite sandwich panel.

Abstract: Prior to curing a composite workpiece assembly, an expandable element can be inserted into a cavity of the workpiece assembly. The expandable element is configured to expand when a predetermined change is produced in an attribute of the element. The attribute can be a temperature of the element. The element is expanded by producing the predetermined change, and the workpiece assembly is cured while the expanded element is in the cavity, so that the expanded element applies positive pressure to inner surfaces of the cavity during curing. The expanded element can be removed from the cavity after curing. The expanded element can comprise a plurality of expandable pellets.

Abstract: A method and system for an aerospace vehicle. A pulse of electromagnetic radiation is transmitted into the composite sandwich panel such that the composite sandwich panel is heated above an ambient temperature. An amount of infrared radiation generated in the composite sandwich panel is detected in response to transmitting the pulse of electromagnetic radiation into the composite sandwich panel using a time window selected to detect the amount of infrared radiation when the pulse of electromagnetic radiation heats the composite sandwich panel. The amount of infrared radiation detected indicates a level of moisture in the composite sandwich panel.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus to couple a decorative composite having a reinforcing layer to a panel are disclosed. An example apparatus includes a decorative layer and a first reinforcing layer coupled to the decorative layer. The example apparatus includes a coil reduction layer that is to apply a force to the first reinforcing layer to reduce coiling of the first reinforcing layer. The example apparatus includes an adhesive layer applied to the coil reduction layer that is coupled to the first reinforcing layer to enable the decorative layer to be coupled to a panel. A rigidity of the first reinforcing layer is to enable the first reinforcing layer to distribute a force exerted by at least one of gas or vapor disposed between the first reinforcing layer and the decorative layer to impede separation of a portion of the decorative layer from the panel.
