The ceramic porous membrane comprises ceramic particles and ceramic sol particles (with the exception of TiO2 sol particles). The ceramic particles and the ceramic sol particles are kneaded to obtain a kneaded product or a slurry, and the kneaded product or the slurry are sintered at a lower temperature. The ceramic sol particles have an average particle diameter of ⅕ or less of an average particle diameter of the ceramic particles, and the ceramic sol has a solid content of 1 to 30% by weight based on the weight of solid content of the ceramic particles. The method of manufacturing a ceramic porous membrane includes adding ceramic particles) having an average particle diameter of ⅕ or less an average particle diameter of ceramic particles to the ceramic particles such that the solid content of the ceramic sol is 1 to 30% by weight based on the weight of a solid content of the ceramic particles, mixing the particles, depositing or molding the resulting mixture, and heat treating the resulting film or molded product at 300° C. or less under vapor atmosphere, or at 300 to 700° C. under ambient atmosphere, thereby fixing the ceramic particles.

A method for operation of membrane reactor is provided. In a membrane reactor, the hydrogen formed in the hydrogen formation portion of the reaction chamber is transmitted to the hydrogen separation portion of the reaction chamber via a hydrogen-selectively permeable membrane and thereby the conversion of raw material gas into hydrogen is improved. Steam and/or carbon dioxide into the hydrogen separation portion are added. In the above method for operation of membrane reactor, the surface area of the hydrogen-selectively permeable membrane of membrane reactor can be made smaller while the advantage of membrane reactor of giving a higher conversion of reaction at low temperatures is being maintained.

An apparatus for sensing low concentration NOx in the atmosphere is disclosed. The apparatus has sensor elements arranged in a flow path of the atmosphere, the resistance of each of said sensor elements varying in response to changes in NOx concentration of the atmosphere; a catalyst arranged between said sensor elements to maintain partial pressures of NO and NO.sub.2 in the atmosphere at an equilibrium state; and measuring means for receiving signals from said sensor elements, one sensor element being contacted with the atmosphere which is not passed through said catalyst and the other sensor element being contacted with the atmosphere which is passed through said catalyst and for determining the concentrations of NO.sub.2 and NO in the atmosphere on the basis of said signals.

A method of measuring a gas concentration for measuring any one of the concentrations of NOx, NO.sub.2, NO, and O.sub.2 by using one or more sensor elements utilizing a metal oxide semiconductor as a sensing element is disclosed. In the method of measuring a gas concentration, any one of the partial pressures of NO.sub.2, NO, and O.sub.2 is calculated on the basis of the following formula (1), and any one of the concentrations of NOx, NO.sub.2, NO, and O.sub.2 is measured on the basis of the calculated partial pressure; ##EQU1## wherein R is resistance and A-H and Q are constant.

A gas sensor for measuring a specific gas component, especially hydrocarbons, in a gas to be measured, including a hydrocarbon prevention filter preferably made of zeolite. An oxygen concentration difference between (1) an oxygen concentration in a gas to be measured from which hydrocarbons are removed by the hydrocarbon prevention filter and further combustible components are removed and (2) a known oxygen concentration or an oxygen concentration in a gas from which only combustible components are removed, is calculated. Once an oxygen amount necessary for a combustion of hydrocarbons is calculated, it is possible to measure a hydrocarbon concentration in a gas to be measured on the basis of the thus calculated oxygen amount.

A method for operating a power generator in which a solid oxide fuel cell is used as a power-generating element and an air electrode of the solid oxide fuel cell is composed of lanthanum manganite, the method involving the step of setting a heating rate and a cooling rate at least in a temperature range of 800.degree. C. to 900.degree. C. at not less than 3.degree. C./min. when the fuel cell is heated up to an operating temperature at the time of starting the power generator and when the fuel cell is cooled from the operating temperature at the time of stopping the power generator. Alternatively, the method involves the step of setting a partial pressure of oxygen, at least in a temperature range of 800.degree. C. to 900.degree. C., in an atmosphere to which the air electrode is exposed, to at not less than 10.sup.-15 arms but not more than 10.sup.-1 arms when the fuel cell is heated up to an operating temperature at the time of starting the power generator and when the fuel cell is cooled from the operating temperature at the time of stopping the power generator.

A process for manufacturing MgO-based .beta."-alumina sintered bodies from a starting powder comprising an MgO-based .beta."-alumina as a main ingredient, through shaping and firing, in which process shaped bodies before firing contain 0.3.about.5 wt. %, preferably 1.about.3 wt. %, of Na aluminate. The resulting sintered bodies are high in density, ionic conductivity and strength and useful for solid electrolytes, for example, of sodium sulfur cells.
