An interframe wavelet video coding (IWVC) method by which an average temporal distance (ATD) is minimized is provided. The IWVC method comprises receiving a group-of-frames and decomposing the group-of-frames into difference frames and first average frames between the frames in a first forward temporal direction and a backward temporal direction, wavelet-decomposing the first difference frames and the first average frames, and quantizing coefficients resulting from the wavelet-decomposition to generate a bitstream. The IWVC method provides improved video coding performance.

The scalable video coding method includes receiving a GOP, performing temporal filtering and spatial transformation thereon, quantizing and generating a bitstream. The scalable video encoder for performing the scalable video coding method includes a weight determination block which determines a weight for scaling. The scalable video decoding method includes dequantizing the coded image information obtained from a received bitstream, performing descaling, inverse spatial transformation, and inverse temporal filtering on the scaled transform coefficients, thereby recovering video frames. The scalable video decoder for performing the scalable video decoding method includes an inverse weighting block. The standard deviation of Peak Signal to Noise Ratios (PSNRs) of frames included in a group of pictures (GOP) is reduced so that video coding performance can be increased.

The video coding method includes estimating a base layer motion vector and an enhancement layer motion vector for each block in a video frame, removing temporal redundancies in the video frame using the enhancement layer motion vectors, spatially transforming the video frame in which the temporal redundancies have been removed and quantizing the spatially transformed video frame to obtain texture information, selecting one of the estimated base layer motion vector and the estimated enhancement layer motion vector for each block, and generating a bitstream containing the motion vector selected for each block and the texture information.

In an exemplary embodiment, the method of encoding an image comprises: generating information about transforms between a first picture and a second picture; generating a reference picture by transforming the second picture based on the generated information about transforms; predicting a current block of a current picture based on at least one of the reference picture and the first picture; and encoding the current block based on the predicting. Therefore, prediction encoding based on more accurate prediction is possible, thereby increasing a compression ratio of image encoding.
