Heat treating UHMWPE by applying pressure with radial constraint at suitable times during a heating protocol reduces or eliminates cavitation, which is otherwise observed to occur when the UHMWPE is heated to a temperature above 300° C. Heat treated UHMWPE can undergo subsequent processing involving crosslinking, deformation, doping with antioxidant, and homogenizing or annealing. Heating during these steps can be carried out even above the onset melt temperature of the UHMWPE without loss of physical properties.

A carbon/carbon part and processes for making carbon/carbon parts are provided. The process involves inserting a polyacrylonitrile preform (PAN preform) into a furnace, introducing an inert atmosphere into the furnace, and ramping up the furnace to a temperature greater than 1200° C. while maintaining the total pressure in the furnace greater 0.5 Atm. The method may convert the PAN preform into a carbon preform. The carbonization may be completed while maintaining the total pressure in the furnace greater than 0.5 Atm.

The present invention provides a method for manufacturing an imitation wood and is featured by adjusting the temperature of a discharge outlet before or during conveyance of thermoplastic elastomers in a helical section of a screw extruder to be lower than the temperature of a tail end of the helical section, such that the viscosity of the thermoplastic elastomers in the discharge outlet increases and the flow velocity reduces at the outlet during the discharge process at the discharge outlet. Thus, the thermoplastic elastomers flow in a direction opposite to the discharge direction and rub, resulting in marks of back-flow and rubbing. During the process of back-flow and rubbing, the plastics will be pulled and break along the rubber elastomers and become filament-like, thereby generating filaments similar to wood. Then, the foaming blank material is squeezed out of the discharge outlet and is forced into a molding machine to proceed with planarity trimming, and the output material is cooled with a preset cold-bath tank of the molding machine, providing adjustment of different densities of imitation wood, such that the imitation wood produced by the present invention has high simulation of wood.

The hopper is disposed external of the heated manifold. The heated manifold is effective for melting the particles into molten thermoplastic material therein. The apparatus further includes a pump having an inlet in fluid communication with the cavity. An outlet of the pump is in fluid communication with an inlet of a dispenser and an outlet of the dispenser is effective for dispensing the molten thermoplastic material therethrough.

A preform for thermoset resin composition molding is provided that upon cure forms a variety of molded and fiber reinforced articles used in a variety of applications such as vehicle components including bed lines, body components, trim, interior components, and undercar components; architectural components such as trim and doors, marine components including hulls, trim, and cockpit pieces; and similar structures in aerospace settings. A novel slurry composition, a novel centrifugal process, or a combination thereof provide superior quality preforms that are created with greater throughput relative to conventional techniques. The inhibition of fiber movement between the time such a fiber contacts the mold, or fibers already in place on the mold, and the time the fibers are set in position provides a superior fiber homogeneity and randomized orientation relative to existing slurry techniques with attributes of low scrap generation, and process flexibility with respect to part shape and fiber material.

A method for making an ultra-high weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) medical implant starts with obtaining a preform consolidated from UHMWPE resin. Thereafter the preform is hot isostaticly pressed at a temperature between 150° C. and 190° C. at a pressure up to 30,000 psi. After the hot isostatic pressing the preform is sequentially irradiated in a solid state at a total radiation dose of 2 to 10 MRad. The irradiated UHMWPE preform is then heated to a temperature of about 110° C. to about 190° C. for between 2 to 10 hours. The irradiated and heated preform is then cooled after each irradiation and heating to at or below 50° C., and thereafter a medical implant is formed from the preform. Alternately, the process can be performed on the medical implant itself.
