    摘要: A system for remotely controlling client recording and storage behavior schedules the recording, storing, and deleting of multimedia content on a client system storage device. The invention accepts as input a prioritized list of program viewing preferences which is compared with a database of program guide objects that indicate when programs of interest are actually broadcast. A schedule of time versus available storage space is generated that is optimal for the viewer's explicit or derived preferred content. The viewer may request that certain content be captured, which results in the highest possible priority for those content. The invention provides objects called a capture requests that are sent by the service to client systems. Capture requests reflect local storage management decisions about how the client system storage is partitioned. Capture requests also allow the service to determine content to be recorded by the client system in the same manner that a viewer requests that certain content are recorded but are more powerful than what a viewer can request. Recording requests for a capture request can preempt viewer requests or be entered at the same or lower priority as a viewer request. Capture requests can adjust all aspects of a recording request and affect the capture request itself. Client system operational functionality are also manipulated by the service using capture requests.

    摘要: Motion picture distribution is performed by converting the motion pictures into digital video signals, combining the video signals with code elements or icons positioned in the active picture area of images formed by the video signals and sent via satellite to theaters or other receiving locations. The video signals are stored at the receiving locations and displayed repetitively to audiences by means of a projection television system. The coded areas in the pictures are used to transmit motion picture identification, theater authorization and other information which can be used to control the distribution and display of the motion pictures. Reports regarding playing of the motion picture are transmitted from each display site to the offices of the remote distributor. Motion pictures are edited by converting the film into video signals, inserting coded areas into the active picture areas of the video signals to provide time codes, edge codes and related information useful for editing. Preferably, edge codes are represented by coded areas recorded on the motion picture film itself, either prior either to or during filming of the motion picture.

    摘要: Screen (10) for a user interface of a television schedule system and process consists of an array (24) of irregular cells (26), which vary in length, corresponding to different television program lengths of one half hour to one-and-one half hours or more. The array is arranged as three columns (28) of one-half hour in duration, and twelve rows (30) of program listings. Some of the program listings overlap two or more of the columns (28) because of their length. Because of the widely varying length of the cells (26), if a conventional cursor used to select a cell location were to simply step from one cell to another, the result would be abrupt changes in the screen (10) as the cursor moved from a cell (26) of several hours length to an adjacent cell in the same row. An effective way of taming the motion is to assume that behind every array (24) is an underlying array of regular cells. By restricting cursor movements to the regular cells, abrupt screen changes will be avoided. With the cursor (32), the entire cell (26) is 3-D highlighted, using a conventional offset shadow (34). The offset shadow (34) is a black bar that underlines the entire cell and wraps around the right edge of the cell. To tag the underlying positionnullwhich defines where the cursor (32) is and thus, where it will move nextnullportions (36) of the black bar outside the current underlying position are segmented, while the current position is painted solid.

    摘要: An analog video tagging and encoding system. The invention inserts an analog tag frame into the analog video stream such that the luminance (Y) values are made to approach zero, i.e., black, allowing a potential tag frame to be quickly identified. Tag information is then encoded as a structured color pattern into the chrominance (Cb and Cr) portions of the frame, making the tag itself invisible to the casual viewer and contains program start/stop information, program segment identification, or data downloads. The color pattern is chosen such that when it is converted into digital form, the digital signal so produced may be easily and minimally parsed to recognize the presence or absence of a tag within a normal frame time period. In a simple embodiment of the invention, the structured analog color pattern may appear as a pattern of colored blocks aligned with the macroblock segmentation performed on the analog signal by the MPEG encoding process, causing the DC component of the encoded Cr and C b macroblocks to precisely reflect the color pattern. The simplest color pattern uses two colors with extremely different Cr or Cb values, and derives a binary encoding sequence where a binary zero (0) might be represented by values near one color, and a binary one (1) represented by values near the other color and is easily extended to create a number of different chrominance levels within each encoded macroblock, allowing multiple bits of tag information to be encoded by each macroblock. Another embodiment of the invention provides a method whereby nulltrimmingnull of the analog signal (i.e., truncation of the signal in the vertical or horizontal direction during transmission) has no effect on the ability to derive the tag from the encoded frame. A window is selected within the tag frame such that the size of the window is known to most likely fit within a trimmed frame and transmitted in its entirety with the tag information redundantly encoded within or outside the window to guarantee that no portion of the tag information is omitted whenever the frame is transmitted. Square colored blocks of a multiple of the macroblock size are used such that a phase encoding is achieved which is easily detected during a single pass over the MPEG bitstream. To insure that all tag data is present, the tag frame is preceded and possibly followed by nullresetnull frames which are exactly opposite from the tag frame, forcing the MPEG encoder to generate all macroblocks for the tag frame, regardless of whether the current frame is an I-frame or not.

    摘要: A method of encoding data in the visible portion of a transmitted video signal without degrading display of the received video signal, and for decoding the data in the received video signal. Each group of data bits to be transmitted, referred to a data symbol, is associated with one of a number of longer predetermined sequences of chips. Each chip sequence is divided into a multiplicity of lines of chips, and each line of chips together with its inverse are embedded, in pairwise fashion, in respective pairs of line scans of the video signal prior to its transmission. Received pairs of line scans are operated upon to detect the lines of chips they represent, and each of the number of chip sequences is correlated with the detected line of chips to derive a correlation magnitude. The chip sequence with the largest correlation magnitude is selected as the chip sequence whose data symbol was transmitted.
