    摘要: A process for the manufacture of high-strength materials from metallic polycrystalline filamentary material, e.g. iron, which has been deposited from the gaseous phase, wherein a mass of the filaments is consolidated by deposition of a metal thereon to join and bond the filaments at their points of intersection, whereafter the mass is briefly heated under pressure to produce a diffusion bond between the metal of the filaments and the metal deposited thereon and to compact the mass. Thereafter the mass may be impregnated with a metal of lower melting point. Loose unbonded masses of filaments may be similarly impregnated, particularly if the filaments are given a prior surface treatment to reduce oxidation and so ensure wetting of the filaments by the impregnating metal. Where the impregnating metal forms an alloy with the metal of the filaments, the latter may be provided with one or more intermediate layers of a non-alloying substance.

    摘要: Dispersion-hardened tungsten and tungsten alloy coatings having a material such as hafnium nitride at a concentration above 0.5 percent by volume are produced by covapor depositing tungsten and hafnium nitride. The hafnium nitride is produced in situ by addition of ammonia or nitrogen to a reducing atmosphere of hydrogen, which is mixed with tungsten and hafnium halide vapors in the presence of a substrate mandrel heated to a temperature above 900* C.

    摘要: A method of measuring the electrical resistance of thin metallic films manufactured under the influence of a plasma. The measurement proceeds by means of a direct current resistance measurement according to the principle of a two point or four point measuring method. The electrical resistance is determined either in the case of at least one measuring or test current, and the voltage connected to the measuring contacts is measured when no measuring or test current is sent through the film, or the electrical resistance is determined in the case of at least two different measuring or test currents of known magnitudes. The measuring methods are applied in the case of manufacture of metallic layers in semiconductor technology, in particular also for the measurement of the ion current injected in the film by the plasma as well as for the determination of variations in the coating rate.

    摘要: A multi-layered wear resistant article and a method for forming the same is disclosed which is adapted for use with cutting tools. More particularly, the article includes a substrate formed from a cemented sintered metal carbide material such as a tungsten carbide and cobalt composition. A bonding layer formed of elemental boron is provided to increase the adhesion between the substrate and an outer coating of a wear resistant material such as titanium boride. A thin intermediate layer of titanium carbide, titanium nitride, titanium carbonitride, hafnium carbide, hafnium nitride, hafnium carbonitride, zirconium carbide, zirconium nitride, zirconium carbonitride, or a mixture of any of the foregoing may be interposed between the boron adhesive layer and the substrate to prevent diffusion of boron from the bonding layer into the substrate.

    摘要: A process is provided for the pack diffusion coating of ferrous metal articles with aluminum, wherein a small but effective amount of an energizer, aluminum chloride, is employed associated with a small but effective amount of a halide selected from the group consisting of an ammonium halide and an anhydrous metal chloride mixed in a pack containing particulate aluminum metal mixed with an inert material, e.g. refractory oxide, in which the ferrous article to be coated is embedded, the process being characterized by the fact that substantial outgassing of aluminum chloride is inhibited during the coating process by controlling in combination the total amount of halides employed not to exceed about 1 - 1/2% of the pack.
