High molecular weight disulfide polymers are synthesized in aqueous media by exposing dithiol compounds to a mild oxidizing environment in the presence of a tertiary amine catalyst. The unique oxidizing system polymerizes monomers through the formation of sulfur-sulfur bonds between dithiol compounds. The same oxidizing system may be used to make disulfide-crosslinked gels from compounds containing multiple thiol groups. The oxidizing system is comprised of oxygen at atmospheric concentration and dilute hydrogen peroxide. A filler such as carbon black may be incorporated into the polymer or cross-linked gel during polymerization. A polydisulfide polymer is provided having a weight average molecular weight of greater than about 100,000 g/mol and a polydispersity index of about 2 or less. A tetrathiol composition results from a reaction of a diacrylate with a trithiol. The tetrathiol composition may be subjected to an oxidizing environment with a tertiary amine catalyst to provide a polytetrathiol polymer network.

A process for preparing a sulfonate terminated polyarylate comprises blending a polyarylate resin with an organic compound to form a reaction mixture, wherein the organic compound contains at least one aliphatic primary amine functional group and at least one other functional group selected from the group consisting of sulfonic acids, sulfonic acid salts, and mixtures thereof, and heating the reaction mixture to a temperature of 225 to 400° C. The temperature of heating is above the glass transition temperature of the polyarylate resin. Sulfonate terminated polyarylates and compositions prepared using the above process, and articles comprising the sulfonate terminated polyarylate compositions, are also disclosed.

The present invention relates to resin compositions for radical curing comprising a component (I) containing reactive carbon-carbon unsaturations and a component (II) containing XH-groups, with X not being C or O, which resin compositions (a) are substantially free of photoinitiators; (b.) have an average number of reactive carbon-carbon unsaturations of component (I) higher than 2; (c) have an average number of XH-groups of component (II) equal to or higher than 2, with at least one of the XH-groups of the XH-component being a thiol group, and; (d) whereby at least one of the average numbers of (b) and (c) is higher than 2; (e) and at most 5 mol % of the reactive unsaturations is capable of undergoing homopolymerisation; (f) respectively is present in the form of a mono-ene functional alkylene; and (g) the molar ratio of the XH-groups and of the reactive unsaturations is in the range of from 4:1 to 1:4; with the proviso that the RU component is not tris-(norborn-5-ene-2-carboxy) propoxypropane. The present invention also relates to processes for curing such resin compositions, in particular by cold curing. And finally, the present invention also relates to a new process for the synthesis of Diels-Alder adducts of cyclopentadiene and a resin component containing telechelic carbon-carbon unsaturation. The resin compositions are capable of providing constructive materials with tack-free surfaces by fast, and tunable, radical curing, and without any problems of so-called oxygen inhibition. Suitable applications are in chemical anchoring, roofing, flooring, (re)-lining, SMCs and BMCs.

Copolymers designed for use as particulate carriers containing functionalizable amino acid subunits for coupling with targeting ligands are described. The copolymers are polyesters composed of α-hydroxy acid subunits such as D,L-lactide and pseudo-α-amino acid subunits which may be derived from serine or terpolymers of D,L-lactide and glycolide and pseudo-α-amino acid subunits which may be derived from serine. Stable vaccine preparations useful as delayed release formulations containing antigen or antigens and adjuvants encapsulated within or physically mixed with polymeric microparticles are described. The particulate carriers are useful for delivering agents to the immune system of a subject by mucosal or parenteral routes to produce immune responses, including antibody and protective responses.
