A process for the production of hydrocarbon lubricant basestock comprises contacting C.sub.2 to C.sub.20 alpha-olefin feedstock, or mixtures thereof, e.g., 1-decene, under heterogeneous oligomerization conditions with a catalyst comprising halides of a metal component anchored on an adsorbent inorganic oxide solid, e.g., silica, by an oxygen-metal bond to provide a reaction mixture containing said hydrocarbon lubricant basestock. The catalyst is prepared by contacting the inorganic oxide solid with organic metal halide of the formula RMXY wherein R is alkyl or aryl, M is aluminum, X is halogen and Y is selected from the group consisting of halogen, alkyl, alkenyl, aryl, alkoxy, and amido moieties.

This method may involve impregnating a pillared vacancy titanate material with a nickel nitrate solution. There is further provided a process for oligomerizing ethylene using this catalyst.

A process is disclosed for the production of synthetic lubricants having high viscosity index and thermal stability by oligomerizing a mixture of C.sub.5 -C.sub.18 or C.sub.6 -C.sub.16 alpha-olefins produced from the thermal cracking of slack wax or recycled slack wax. C. and viscosity index above about 130 and are characterized by internal methyl groups attached to side chain tertiary carbon atoms.Hydrocarbon lubricant can be based on propene feedstock with the resulting oligomer containing less than 2.5 methyl groups per 12 carbon atoms.

A catalyst composition for polymerizing alpha-olefins is prepared by treating a carrier containing OH groups with a liquid solution containing an excess of an organomagnesium composition with respect to the OH groups and contacting the thus-formed magnesium-containing carrier with a hydrocarbyl alcohol and at least one transition metal compound. Prior to contacting the magnesium-containing carrier with the alcohol, most of the liquid must be removed therefrom, so that it comprises not more than about 6% of the liquid. The amount of the transition metal compound is such that the molar ratio thereof to magnesium in the reaction mixture is about 0.3 to about 0.9. Also disclosed is a process for polymerizing alpha-olefins in the presence of the catalyst of the invention.

This invention provides a process for obtaining m-methylstyrene from a mixture with p-methylstyrene that comprises hydrogenating a mixture of p-methylstyrene and m-methylstyrene in the presence of a zeolite having a Constraint Index of about 1 to about 12, a silica to alumina mole ratio of at least about 12, and a dried crystal density of not less than about 1.6 grams per cubic centimeter, modified with at least one element of Group IA, IIA, IVB, or VB of the Periodic Chart of the Elements and a metal of Group VIII of the Periodic Chart of the Elements; thereby obtaining a mixture of m-methylstyrene and p-ethyltoluene, and removing p-ethyltoluene by distillation.

A four-step method for the selective production of the 1,3-isomer of methylphenol comprising the alkylation of toluene with propylene in the presence of a specified type of zeolite alkylation catalyst followed by the selective reaction, via a specified type of shape selective zeolite, of the 1,4-isomer of the alkylation product to leave the 1,3-isomer thereof in excess of equilibrium. Subsequent oxidation and acid catalyzed rearrangement results in desirably high yield of 3-methylphenol.

This invention is directed to a poly alpha olefin (PAO) composition formed in a first oligomerization, wherein at least portions of the PAO have properties that make them highly desirable for a subsequent oligomerization. A preferred process for producing this PAO uses a single site catalyst at high temperatures without adding hydrogen to produce a low viscosity PAO with excellent Noack volatility at high conversion rates. This PAO comprises a dimer product with at least 25 wt % tri-substituted vinylene olefins wherein said dimer product is highly desirable as a feedstock for a subsequent oligomerization. This PAO also comprises trimer and optionally higher oligomer products with outstanding properties that make these products useful as lubricant basestocks following hydrogenation.
