    摘要: Alkali alcoholates, also called alkali alkoxides, are produced from alkali metal salt solutions and alcohol using a three-compartment electrolytic cell. The electrolytic cell includes an anolyte compartment configured with an anode, a buffer compartment, and a catholyte compartment configured with a cathode. First and second separators are positioned between the anolyte compartment and the catholyte compartment to define a buffer compartment. The first and second separators are permeable to alkali ions. They may be fabricated of the same or different materials including, but not limited to, an alkali ion conducting solid electrolyte configured to selectively transport alkali ions, a porous ceramic, or a porous polymer separator material. The catholyte solution may include an alkali alcoholate and alcohol. The anolyte solution may include at least one alkali salt. The buffer compartment solution may include a soluble alkali salt and an alkali alcoholate in alcohol.

    摘要: An apparatus for providing beneficial agents to the body is disclosed in one aspect of the invention as including an implant and a device integrated with the implant to generate a beneficial agent, such as iodine, chlorine, or other halogens. The device includes electrodes to conduct an electrical current and a substantially solid layer between the electrodes. An electrical current passes between the electrodes to electrochemically generate the beneficial agent. The implant may include a variety of devices to produce the beneficial agent, including for example an electrochemical cell, a capacitor, an electrochemical capacitor, a galvanic cell, or the like. Similarly, because of the solid state construction of the device, the device may, in certain embodiments, be incorporated into a load-bearing implant. This may be useful for use with certain types of implants, such as orthopedic implants.

    摘要: The present invention is directed to a device for delivering a fluid to the surrounding environment. The device includes a housing having an interior region and at least one opening, a fluid contained within the interior region, and a device means to force the fluid through the opening, and against gravity. Such a forcing device preferably comprises a gas generating pump, designed to force fluid positioned below the opening through a channel or conduit and out of the housing. Moreover, the opening in the housing may be associated with a member for controllably releasing fluid from the housing, for instance one or more porous plugs, an emanator pad, a decorative element or an adjustable valve. Additionally, the invention contemplates the use of a moveable member, such as a piston, flexible bladder, or expandable bladder, to separate the fluid from the gas generating pump and assist is forcing fluid out of the housing.

    摘要: A brush having a handle and associated surface application portion, which brush handle contains a beneficial agent generator. The brush typically has a stem with first and second ends, the first end serving as a handle. Bristles are associated with the stem's second end. A beneficial agent generator (such as an electrochemical gas generating cell) that generates a fluid comprising an oxidizing agent is encased within the stem. For treating teeth, the generator will generally be chosen to generate an oxidizing agent such as a peroxide, ozone, oxygen, or mixtures thereof. When the generator requires it, the brush will also include a battery and a switch associated with the stem and in electrical contact with the generator. The switch may be associated with the first stem end and will be in operable (e.g., electrical) contact with the electrochemical gas generating cell and the battery. When the brush is used to brush teeth, it will generally also include a vent or port, in fluid communication with the electrochemical gas generating cell, for venting undesired fluids (e.g., hydrogen gas) from the second end of the toothbrush, such as the first stem end. The invention may be used in various useful methods such as cleaning, bleaching, and sanitizing tooth or other surfaces.

    摘要: Disclosed is a self-contained device which continuously dispenses a packaged fluid. The device is particularly suited for applications where several months may lapse before performance is manually initiated, after which a consistent steady flow is required for an extended period until the packaged fluid is exhausted. The device is also particularly suited for applications where ease of fabrication and where availability of materials are important factors. A button cell battery provides a driving force to reduce atmospheric oxygen at a simple air cathode, ions are transported through an ion-exchange membrane, and oxygen gas is released at a simple anode. The effective transport of oxygen gas pressurizes a chamber resulting in fluid contained in a flexible bladder within the chamber to be forced through an outlet. This device is intended to be very low in cost and thus disposable.
