Abstract: A longitudinal conveying system for mechanically feeding one or more workpieces to a predetermined loading position, comprising a pair of spaced, parallel longitudinal workpiece supports, with each such supports including an upper support face and having a distal end and a proximal end. The predetermined loading position is located adjacent the proximal end of the workpiece supports, and a longitudinal conveying beam is moveably located intermediate the workpiece supports. The conveying beam has an upper surface for supporting one or more workpieces. Driving apparatus for moving the conveying beam in an upward direction, a forward conveying direction toward the proximal end, a downward direction, and a backward direction is provided for enabling the conveying beam to lift workpieces from the workpiece supports for movement toward the proximal end. The downward movement is substantially vertical, and the upper surface of the conveying beam is lowered below the upper workpiece support faces prior to the backward movement returning the conveying beam to a predetermined original position. A device for detecting when a workpiece on the upper surface of the conveying beam has reached the loading position is provided, and the conveying system includes a control device, for automatically varying the length of stroke of the forward movement of the upper surface so that the detected workpiece can be properly placed at the loading position by the downward movement of the conveying beam.

Abstract: A surgical clip having a sliding state and a crimped state is adapted for use in a surgical procedure initially to slide along suture ends to an operative position and ultimately to crimp the suture ends at the operative position. a sub straight, bendable between the sliding state and the crimped state carries at least one coating having either lubricious or traction enhancing properties. A second coating can be added to form a coating laminate with the outer coating having lubricious properties facilitating the sliding state and the inner coating having traction enhancing properties facilitating thee crimped state.

Abstract: A duckbill check valve and septum combination includes a hollow elastomeric body having an open proximal end, a closed distal end and a pair of opposed flat portions that form a distal edge. The distal edge includes a slit having a periphery that is smaller than the periphery of the instrument inserted therethrough. The slit provides a zero seal in the absence of an instrument and an instrument seal in the presence of an instrument. A shield including a tubular member and a plurality of blades protruding distally from the distal end of the tubular member may be placed inside the check valve and operates to center and guide the surgical instrument through the blades before expanding the slit of the check valve. An instrument inserted into the check valve stretches the distal portion of the duckbill valve to form a septum-like seal around the inserted instrument.

Abstract: A stabilization seal is used with existing cannulas for forming a gas-tight seal with tissue in a body wall The stabilization seal includes a cylindrical inflatable elongate tube having a graduated wall-thickness that is thicker in a central region and thinner in a distal-end region. The tube includes a sealing cuff, having an inflation port, for sealing around a cannula. Application of inflation pressure greatly expands the distal-end region while the central region expands slightly. Another embodiment of a stabilization seal includes an inflatable thread that is used with a cannula having a helical channel on its outer surface. An inflatable tube is wound into the channel. A distal end of the tube includes a gas-tight seal and a proximal end of the tube includes an inflation port In the uninflated condition the nested tube is flush with the channel. Inflating the tube enlarges the cannula assembly.

Abstract: An incrementally adjustable wound retractor, which provides access to a body cavity, includes an inner ring having a diameter greater than the desired diameter of the wound incision, an outer ring having an annular axis and a diameter greater than the desired diameter of the wound incision, and a flexible sleeve disposed in a generally cylindrical form between the inner and outer rings. The outer ring includes first and second circular tubes spaced apart axially with each including a lumen having a rigid, noncompliant split hoop placed therein. The outer ring may be rolled over itself and around the annular axis to retract the sleeve with sufficient force to stretch the incision to the desired diameter. A gel cap seal may be coupled to the outer ring outside of the biological body to seal the opening produced by the wound retractor between the body cavity and outside the body cavity.

Abstract: A releasable mechanism such as a cap is adapted for use with an access sheath having an elongate tube and a handle structure disposed at a proximal end of the tube. The releasable mechanism is sized and configured to fit the handle structure, which is shaped like the bell of a horn, to further facilitate use with surgical instrumentation. The releasable mechanism may operate as a separate cap that snaps onto the handle structure to provide access pathways to the sheath. The releasable mechanism may also be disposed at a proximal end of a surgical instrument to be introduced into the access sheath such that it may be interlocked with the sheath. In a method of manufacturing a kink-resistant sheath, a wire is initially coated with a plastic material, the coated wire is then wrapped around a mandrel forming a plurality of windings, and the wound coated wire is heated until the plastic material melts and bonds the windings to form a wire-reinforced sheath. The plastic material is preferably polyurethane but may be a thermoplastic, a thermoset or any plastic material having hard and/or soft durometer. The wound coated wire may be heated by capturing the windings within a shrink tube or compressing the windings in a mold and heating the windings until the sheath is formed. In another aspect of the invention, a mandrel is used as part of an extrusion process. In another aspect of the invention, another coating or outside layer could be formed over the spring reinforcement by dipping in a solvent based solution. In yet another embodiment of the invention, a braid such as a polyester braid may be used instead of or in addition to the coil spring to form a kink-resistant sheath.
