A PZT micro-actuator for a head gimbal assembly includes a pair of separate PZT elements and each PZT element has a body and a plurality of electrical pads. The body has at least two electrode-piezoelectric combination layers laminated together. The at least two electrode-piezoelectric combination layers are physically connected with but electrically isolated from each other. Each electrode-piezoelectric combination layer has at least two of the electrical pads thereon. The electrical pads extend out from the body of the corresponding PZT element. All the electrical pads of each PZT element are offset a predetermined distance therebetween to be electrically isolated. The present invention also discloses a head gimbal assembly (HGA) with the PZT micro-actuator, an assembling method for the head gimbal assembly and a disk drive unit having such HGA.

The invention relates to a method for the manufacture of substituted phosphanes and substituted phosphanes manufactured according to the method. Phosphanes, phosphane oxides, sulfides or selenides are used as ligands in coordination compounds. They play a central role in controlling the activity and selectivity of catalysts. The object is achieved by the invention by synthesizing heterocyclic substituents on aromatic groups by introducing acetyl groups. In this manner, previously unknown representatives of the families of phosphanes, phosphane oxides, sulfides and selenides are made accessible.

The present invention relates to a compact motorized rotational stage for microscopy applications and control methods for automated sample orientation/rotation. The rotational stage includes a motor, a rotational motion transmission mechanism, and a rotating sample holder for accommodating a holding device such as glass slides/Petri dishes of different sizes. Mouse embryos are used as an example to explain the control methods. A pattern recognition utility was developed for identifying mouse embryo structures. The transformation between the holding device rotational coordinate frame and the translational positioning stage coordinate frame is calibrated during image-based visual servo control. The polar body of an embryo is oriented through purely image-based visual servo control or through coordinate transformation and closed-loop position control.

The method further includes using the first structure and the second structure to isolate a portion of the semiconductor device for the bit line implant.

Methods of controlling seeking of a transducer that is adjacent to a rotatable disk in a disk drive are disclosed. The methods may include accelerating the transducer radially across the rotatable disk from an initial track on the rotatable disk toward a destination track on the rotatable disk, estimating a deceleration switching position/velocity point, estimating a maximum deceleration position/velocity point following the deceleration switching position/velocity point, and estimating a deceleration current required to decelerate the transducer from a non-zero velocity at the maximum deceleration position/velocity point to zero velocity at the destination track. The estimated deceleration current is compared to a maximum available deceleration current, and responsive to a determination that the current required to decelerate the transducer from the maximum deceleration point to the destination track exceeds the maximum available deceleration current, the estimated deceleration switching point is adjusted. Related disk drive apparatus are also disclosed.

A hard disk drive is disclosed comprising at least one disk rotatable about an axis, an actuator assembly moveable relative to the disk, a transducer positioned on the actuator assembly, an actuator signal line, a piezoelectric actuator element disposed on the actuator assembly and electrically interconnected to the actuator signal line, a processor, a sensor signal line and a piezoelectric sensor element for sensing a vibration. The piezoelectric sensor element is collocated with the piezoelectric actuator element and electrically interconnected to the processor by the sensor signal line. The piezoelectric actuator element is operable to move the at least one transducer relative to a surface of the disk. The piezoelectric sensor element is electrically isolated from the piezoelectric actuator element. A method for detecting a vibration in a hard disk drive actuator assembly is also disclosed.
