Abstract: A hybrid transmission has a housing with two chambers. One chamber contains electric motors and other transmission components that require a liquid lubricant and coolant such as automatic transmission fluid. The other chamber contains power electronics that must be isolated from the liquid lubricant/coolant. To reduce the number of breather tubes required, it is beneficial if air can move between the chambers. A terminal block cooperates with a separating wall between the two chambers to create a labyrinth seal between the chambers.

Abstract: An electric drive system includes an inverter and a variable voltage converter. An inductor associated with the variable voltage converter is subject to temperature limits. Dynamic models are used to estimate the temperature of the inductor. Inputs to these dynamics models include DC current, DC voltage, Battery Voltage, oil pump speed, motor speed, and sump temperature. Empirical constants in the models are set based on vehicle testing.

Abstract: A power converter includes a pair of series connected switches and circuitry. The circuitry includes another switch and an optocoupler that activates responsive to changes in current through one of the series connected switches exceeding a predefined threshold. Activation of the optocoupler causes the another switch to conduct and reduce a gate voltage of the one of the series connected switches to reduce the changes in current through the one of the series connected switches.

Abstract: A closed ferromagnetic housing has a pair of access ports and a center ferromagnetic post extending from and between opposite ends thereof. At least one conductor, contained within and completely surrounded by the closed ferromagnetic housing, is wound around the center ferromagnetic post such that the closed ferromagnetic housing, center ferromagnetic post, and at least one conductor form an inductor in which the ferromagnetic housing and the center ferromagnetic post define a core of the inductor and the at least one conductor defines a coil of the inductor. The access ports are configured to permit flow of coolant into the closed ferromagnetic housing and around the center ferromagnetic post to cool the at least one conductor.

Abstract: A controller of a vehicle power system closes a pre-charge contactor and one of a pair of main contactors to electrically connect a battery and inverter such that current flows through a pre-charge resistor. The controller also opens the pair to electrically disconnect the battery and inverter, and closes a switch configured to complete a circuit such that charge acquired by a capacitor of the inverter is dissipated via the pre-charge resistor.

Abstract: A vehicle includes an inverter having a supply bus including a contactor operable to conduct current through a resistive element connected to a capacitive element having a voltage supplied by a battery. The vehicle includes a controller configured to energize a first gate of the inverter. The energization is responsive to the voltage exceeding a threshold. The controller is configured to detect current flow between a first phase associated with the gate and the bus based on a voltage drop associated with the voltage.

Abstract: A DC to AC inverter includes a plurality of power units. Each power unit has a pair of switches, a DC linking capacitor, AC and DC bus bars, and a monolithic insulating material that encapsulates the switches, capacitor and bus bars. Each switch is sandwiched between one of the AC bars and one of the DC bus bars. The monolithic insulating material exposes external surfaces of at least one the bus bars sandwiching each switch.
