摘要: A big pattern for a run-in area which allows data reproduction to be performed stably even when the recording density of an optical disc is increased is provided. An optical disc according to the present invention includes tracks, each of which divided into a plurality of recording blocks. Each of the plurality of blocks includes a run-in area and a data area. In the run-in area, a prescribed run-in bit pattern is recordable; and in the data area, bit patterns having a plurality of bit lengths obtained by modulating data as a recording target in accordance with a prescribed modulation rule are recordable. In this optical disc, at least one of spatial frequencies corresponding to the bit patterns having the plurality of bit lengths is higher than a cutoff frequency. The run-in bit pattern recordable in the run-in area includes the bit patterns having the plurality of bit lengths, from which the bit pattern corresponding to the frequency higher than the OTF cutoff frequency has been excluded.

摘要: A frequency and phase control apparatus includes an analog/digital conversion section for converting a reproduction signal into a multiple bit digital signal based on a clock signal; a maximum likelihood decoding section for converting the multiple bit digital signal into a binary signal; a pattern detection section for detecting a pattern of the binary signal; and a determination section for determining whether or not the multiple bit digital signal and the clock signal are in synchronization with each other based on the detection result. When the determination result of the determination section indicates that the multiple bit digital signal and the clock signal are in synchronization with each other, the maximum likelihood decoding section generates a binary signal based on a first state transition rule; otherwise, the maximum likelihood decoding section generates a binary signal based on a second state transition rule.

摘要: A waveform equalizer for equalizing a waveform of a reproduction signal. A delay element delays a propagation of the reproduction signal. A plurality of multipliers multiply predetermined coefficients by the reproduction signal and the delayed propagation reproduction signal. A detector detects an asymmetry of the reproduction signal arising from physical profiles of each of the marks and the non-marks, and outputs a detection signal representing an amount of asymmetry. A discriminator outputs a discrimination signal in response to a discrimination of the marks and the non-marks. A calculator calculates a first coefficient multiplied by the reproduction signal of the marks based on the outputted detection signal, and calculates a second coefficient multiplied by the reproduction signal of the non-marks. A selector selects either the first or second coefficient, based upon the outputted discriminating signal.

摘要: The present invention provides a method for writing data on a multilayer optical disc with N information storage layers (where N is an integer and N≧2). The kth deepest one (where k is an integer and 1≦k≦N) of the storage layers of the multilayer optical disc is called a kth information storage layer. The method includes the steps of: (A) finding the number of layers that an optical disc loaded into an optical disc drive has (disc type recognition); if the number of layers is X (which is an integer and X≧2), (B) tentatively writing data on a test write area of an mth information storage layer (where m is an integer and 1≦m≦X−1), thereby determining a provisional initial optical recording power (performing OPC); (C) choosing an appropriate correction coefficient according to the level of a target layer, on which data needs to be written, and correcting the provisional initial optical recording power based on the correction coefficient chosen, thereby determining an initial optical recording power; and (D) starting writing the data on the target layer with the initial optical recording power.
