    摘要: A contact magnetic transfer method for forming a pattern of magnetized servo regions in the magnetic recording layer of a rigid magnetic recording disk uses a flexible master disk and a differential gas pressure to press the patterns of the master disk against the slave disk. The master disk is a flexible plastic film with islands of magnetic shielding material extending above the film surface, the islands forming a pattern representative of the servo pattern to be formed in the recording layer of the disk. The plastic film is sealed at the outer periphery of the opening of a pressure chamber with the islands located outside the chamber. The previously DC-magnetized slave disk is brought into gentle contact with the islands and gas pressure inside the chamber is increased to slightly above atmospheric. This controlled pressure presses the islands into contact with the slave disk, at which time a magnet magnetizes the regions of the recording layer not aligned with the islands in the direction opposite to the original DC-magnetized direction. The magnet is located on a rotatable stage within the chamber beneath the plastic film and mounted so that the length of the gap is in the radial direction corresponding to the radius of the slave disk.

    摘要: A leader pin assembly for attachment to tape as a generic and space-efficient interface between tape and equipment which manipulates the tape, and a method for making the same. The leader pin assembly preferably includes a leader pin, an elastomer element, and a clip. The leader pin is barbell-shaped, having enlarged ends and at least one pair of flanges each spaced a distance from a respective enlarged end to define a pair of recesses and a center section of the leader pin. The center section of the leader pin is sized to permit tape to be wound around the center section, with the elastomer element surrounding the tape and with the clip snugly surrounding the elastomer element to keep the tape securely in place around the center section of the leader pin. The end surfaces of the leader pin may have an outward curve to ensure smooth movement across equipment surfaces during leader pin assembly manipulation. Also the edges of the leader pin may be radiused.

    摘要: A magnetic recording disk drive has a rectifier circuit made up of bipolar transistors. Upon removal of power to the spindle motor, the rectifier circuit converts AC spindle motor output to DC actuator coil current to drive the actuator to a parking ramp where the read/write heads are "unloaded" from their respective disk surfaces. The transistor emitter-base junctions are connected to a switch, such as a pair of field-effect transistors, that is responsive to removal of power to the spindle motor. The total current flowing in these emitter-base junctions is small due to the use of series resistors and because the current in the emitter-base circuit does not flow through the actuator coil. The emitter-collector paths of the bipolar transistors are connected as a three-phase, full-wave rectifier to the actuator coil. When the transistors are turned on by the small amount of current from the spindle motor windings through the emitter-base junctions, the majority of current from the windings is allowed to flow through the emitter-collector paths of those transistors to the actuator coil.

    摘要: A gimbaled compliant guide for tape drives includes two plates mounted adjacent opposite edges of an arcuate tape bearing surface. The plates are pivotably mounted to accommodate variances in the tape path resulting from tape path tolerances and tape distortions. One plate is also mounted to a leaf spring to accommodate variations in tape width. The combination of simple compliancy and the ability to pivot eliminates the concentration of the stress at a single contact point between the tape edge and the guiding mechanism. By evenly distributing the stress along the span of contact between the edge of the tape and the guides, particulate matter generated from such contact is minimized. Such guiding mechanism may be used on any element of the tape path.

    摘要: A cantilever stylus with an integrally formed conical tip is provided for atomic force microscopy AFM. The method for forming a stylus includes forming a circular masking pattern on the surface of a silicon substrate and anisotropically etching the silicon to form a post under the masking pattern. The post is then isotropically etched to produce a conical silicon tip mold. In one embodiment of the invention the silicon substrate and the conical silicon tip mold are thermally oxidized to form a cantilever stylus having including a cantilever arm with a conical tip fixed to its free end. In another embodiment of the invention the silicon substrate and the conical silicon tip mold are coated with a thin film of a dielectric material to form a cantilever stylus with a conical tip. In this embodiment the backside of the stylus is coated with a conductive material and a strong electric field is applied to the tip to cause electromigration of the conductive material to the point of the tip.

    摘要: A magnetic recording system configured for recording to a bit patterned media using both hypertrack recording and shingled recording. The magnetic recording system includes a write pole with a notched trailing edge that results in a write bubble with a trailing edge that has two outer convex lobes separated by a centrally disposed concave region. By locating one of the lobes over first and second data tracks of a hypertrack, a proper alignment of the relative phase of the two tracks can be maintained. Further adjustment to the alignment can be achieved by adjusting the radial location of the write head.

    摘要: Embodiments herein illustrate patterned servo data that is used to facilitate subsequent servo writing to a magnetic disk while allowing the patterned disk to be planarized with a relatively simple planarization process. One disk drive system includes a magnetic disk that is patterned with magnetic lands and nonmagnetic grooves. The magnetic disk also includes bootstrap bands that may be configured at an inner diameter of the magnetic disk. The magnetic lands of the bootstrap bands have varying sizes and are patterned as servo data having a uniform polarity of magnetization. The bootstrap bands have a width that is sufficiently narrow to support an air bearing surface of a slider. The data tracks are circumferentially configured proximate to the bootstrap bands. The slider reads the patterned servo data to facilitate writing of additional servo data in the data tracks.

    摘要: Methods of defining servo patterns and data patterns for forming patterned magnetic media are described. For one method, a lithographic process is performed to define a servo pattern in servo regions on a substrate. The lithographic process also defines a first data pattern in data regions of the substrate. The first data pattern is then transferred to (i.e., etched into) the data regions. Self-assembly structures are then formed on the data pattern in the data regions to define a second data pattern. The servo pattern is then transferred to the servo regions and the second data pattern is transferred to the data regions. Thus, the servo pattern is defined through lithographic processes while the data pattern is defined by a combination of lithographic processes and self-assembly.
