摘要: A system and method are disclosed for monitoring the performance of a motor vehicle. The vehicle's instantaneous accelerations in at least two directions are continually sensed and stored as coded signals in a computer memory. Performance variables of the vehicle are computed from the acceleration signals stored in memory along with associated time and date codes. By means of inertial navigation and/or radio transmissions from global positioning system satellites, the vehicle's global position is also computed and stored. The stored performance variables are analyzed over a period of time in order to evaluate how the vehicle is being driven. When an erratic or otherwise hazardous driving pattern is detected, signals may be generated to warn the driver and/or traffic authorities.

摘要: A method and apparatus for operating on living cells in order to transfer material to the interior of selectively targeted cells is disclosed. The operation may take place in a reaction chamber in which a group of cells are disposed, only some of which are desired to receive material which serves to transform or otherwise affect the cells. In one embodiment, certain of the cells in the reaction chamber are targeted by computerized image analysis of images of the cells as generated by confocal microscopy. The targeted cells are then transfected with genetic material using a computer controlled laser beam. The laser beam creates pores in the membranes of the targeted cells through which genetic material also present within the reaction chamber may pass. An electric field may also be employed to facilitate pore formation.

摘要: An apparatus and method are disclosed in which the centrifugation of a liquid mixture in order to separate out components of the mixture with different sedimentation rates is adaptively controlled by monitoring the sedimentation of detectable particles and controlling the centrifugation so as to effect a desired localization of the detectable particles. Such adaptive control may be performed with a continuous flow centrifugal separator or a batch-type centrifuge. The detectable particles may be test particles having a sedimentation constant approximately equal to a component of interest in the mixture whose localization is desired.

摘要: A pullable, steerable watercraft is operable to be towed behind a power boat of kite. The watercraft has a steering mechanism within the watercraft body, and has a dome-shaped steering control recessed into the top surface thereof. The steering mechanism includes a movable mechanical shaft or arm which extends through the interior of the watercraft and which pivots about a vertical axis in order to rotate a rudder.

摘要: Fastening devices such as washers, seals and drive pins subject to corrosive deterioration of all or select portions thereof wherein all or such select portions are protected from such corrosion and failure by a thin coating or coatings of hard surface material or materials. In a preferred form, the fastening device is coated with a synthetic diamond material formed as a thin layer in situ thereon. In addition to preventing moisture and other corrosive material from penetrating to the base metal, such synthetic diamond material serves to preserve the surface integrity of the fastening device preventing the formation or spread of surface flaws produced during use or during the fabrication of the fastening device.

摘要: A method and system for controlling the reception of video signals in accordance with the program content of the signals is disclosed. In accordance with the invention, a digital program code is simultaneously transmitted along with the audio and video information in an unused portion of the composite video signal, such as the so-called back porch region of the blanking interval. Circuitry is interposed between the video signal and the display generating circuitry of a television receiver which extracts such program code and either passes or blocks the reception and display of the video signal in accordance with a comparison between the extracted program code and a stored program code. The stored program code indicates those types of programs which are desired to be blocked from reception and display by the television receiver, such as programs containing violence, nudity, or strong language. The system may be employed to either block entire programs or only those portions of programs having an objectionable program content.

摘要: High density recording systems and methods are disclosed which employ a radiation beam to form spot-like recordings in record members such as discs, tapes and cards. The angle, offset or cross-sectional shape of the recording beam can be varied so as to vary the angle, offset or shape of the corresponding recordings in the record member. The recorded information can be electro-optically or magnetically detected and discriminated from each other to provide high density recordings of alphanumeric characters or digital data. Enhanced detection scanning is effected by ultrasonically vibrating the laser or an optical element, such as a prism or mirror receiving the reading light beam, in a manner to cause it to scan back and forth laterally to the record track as a longitudinal scanning movement is effected parallel to the longitudinal axis or centerline of the track. The reflected light is detected, computer processed and analyzed to effect proper detection of the recordings to generate correct data therefrom.

摘要: Improvements in gears and gear teeth structures for use in driving assemblies, such as machines, vehicles and the like, wherein the teeth portions of the gears and, in certain instances, other portions thereof, are coated with a hard synthetic diamond material deposited thereagainst as carbon atoms derived from a fluid, such as methane gas, when high energy radiation, such as microwave radiation, is beamed through the gas against the surfaces of the gears and gear teeth thereof. In certain instances, the hard diamond material coating the gear teeth and the spaces therebetween, is overcoated with a thin layer of chromium which serves to protect the diamond surfaces of the teeth during use so as to prevent destruction of the diamond layer by physical attrition caused by stress and abrasive particles engaging the teeth during use of the gears. In a particular form of the invention, two or more gears having their teeth similarly coated with synthetic diamond material are assembled in meshing engagement with each other and a coating of chromium disposed on the outer surfaces of the diamond material coating the teeth serves to lubricate and protect the diamond coating against destruction or attrition as the gears mesh and are driven with respect to each other.

摘要: An automatic scanning apparatus and method for detecting the presence of one or more objects in an image field under investigation or inspection. Electro-optical scanning means, such as a television camera, is employed to scan an image field and generate output electrical signals which vary in accordancd with variations in the optical characteristics of the matter and objects in the image field scanned. Such signals are computer processed and analyzed to generate coded electrical signals which define optical characteristics of portion of the image field scanned, such as objects or the images of objects scanned, their shape, color of a combination of color and shape. Electronic means is provided to generate further coded electrical signals which indicate the presence of one or more objects in the image field scanned and may be used to effect intelligent indications thereof, to control one or more devices such as a motor or motors and/or to provide information for computational purposes to be rpocessed and utilized by a computer. In one form, that shape of an object or objects is detected arid coded signals generated are employed to effect a comparison of such shape with information relating to the shapes of known objects to identify the object or objects scanned. In another form, the color or surface characteristics of an object is detected and resulting signals indicative thereof are compared with information derived from a memory to identify either the object or its color or surface characteristics. In a third form both shape and color are detected and compared with recorded information for identification purposes.
