Abstract:
A method of thermoplastic coating composite structures includes heating a tool. A thermoplastic layer is deposited onto the heated tool by thermal spraying a thermoplastic on the heated tool. Composite material is applied onto the thermoplastic layer. The thermoplastic layer and the composite material are then cured.
Abstract:
A method for forming a coating on a substrate using an atmospheric pressure plasma discharge. The method comprises introducing an atomized liquid and/or solid coating-forming material into an atmospheric pressure plasma discharge and/or an ionized gas stream resulting therefrom, and exposing the substrate to the atomized coating-forming material. The application also described a method for polymerizing a polymer forming material, and further to apparatus for forming a coating on a substrate.
Abstract:
Powders of oxidized polyarylene sulfide and powders comprising from 1 to 99% by weight of oxidized polyarylene sulfide and from 1 to 99% by weight of a metal, carbide, ceramic or high temperature polyimide, polyamide imide, polyester imide and aromatic polyester plastic, or a mixture thereof are very suitable for use in thermal spraying and thereby form coatings having a strong chemical and mechanical resistance and high dimensional stability when exposed to high and low temperatures. Such coatings are advantageous for use as abradable seal clearance control coating in the compressor section of gas turbine engines, motor vehicle turbochargers and superchargers, and for use as a coating of reaction vessels, kitchen ware, sealings or bearings.

Abstract:
Multi-layer corrosion resistant polymer composite coatings are described wherein a first coating layer is applied by high velocity high temperature spray, thermal spray, plasma spray, fluidized bed, hot melt or electrostatic spray onto an unprepared, particle embedded or alternatively prepared substrate, and the outer surface of the still warm first layer is roughened by embedding particles therein or the outer surface is roughened mechanically, and a second coating layer is applied thereover. Filler powder may be added to one or both of the layers to substantially match the thermal expansion coefficients of the two layers.
Abstract:
A high temperature thermal sprayable material, such as a metal or metal oxide, is adhered to the surface of a thermal sprayable plastic particle to form a cladding layer thereon. The high temperature material cladding layer provides a thermal barrier that allows use of the plastic in a high temperature thermal spray process to create a duplex coating containing plastic.
Abstract:
A cylinder or roller for paper, plastic or material webs is formed of a plastic material reinforced with fibers and is used for the purpose of transporting, deflecting or web guiding. Instead of a layer covering the casing and being applied with an electrolytic method or by a thermal spraying method, an abrasion-resistant layer of a synthetic resin and a filler of a powder of abrasion-resistant material is used.
Abstract:
A flame spray device of the internal burner type has a fuel and oxidizer mixture combusted within a combustion chamber feeding products of combustion to a discharge nozzle passage of reduced inner diameter. An axially aligned metal piece injector has a centrally disposed injection bore hole positioned upstream of the combustion chamber and is provided with particles which are fed through the centrally disposed injection bore hole with the injection bore hole opening near the entrance of the nozzle passage. The metal piece terminates in a cone-shaped section with a reduced diameter end proximate to the entrance to the nozzle passage. A knife-edge terminal face is thereby produced intersecting the injector bore hole to minimize turbulence and rotation of the stream of carrier gas containing the powder exiting the injector metal piece injection hole. An annular jet stream surrounding the gaseous jet stream is wholly or partially formed of super-heated steam such that the steam, resulting from vaporization of water droplets, acts to cool the structural components of the internal burner. The device may alternatively be constituted by a plasma torch device.
Abstract:
A coated prosthetic implant and a method of forming a continuous coating of highly crystalline polymer over a prosthetic implant by means of passing particles of polymer through a high temperature plasma and subsequently depositing the molten particles over the implant surface. This invention is especially useful for coating polymer composite implants, such as a femoral insert for a hip joint prosthesis, with a coating of poly (aryl-ether-ketone).
