A class of benzocyclobutene/bisimide copolymers having superior toughness are disclosed. The copolymers are derived from bisbenzocyclobutene monomers by one of structures ##STR1## in which R is selected from unsubstituted and non-electrophilic substituted phenylene, naphthalenediyl and ##STR2## X is selected from oxygen, sulfur, nitrogen, --CH.sub.2 -- and --C(CH.sub.3).sub.2 --; and X' is selected from O, S, N and --CH.sub.2 --. Also disclosed is a method for preparing a bisbenzocyclobutene/bisimide copolymer having a Tg greater than 200.degree. C. and a Mode I fracture toughness greater than 2 MPa.m.sup.1/2.

Coatings of Group IB metals are formed by chemical vapor deposition, in which a heat decomposable organometallic compound of the formula (I) ##STR1## where M is a Group IB metal such as copper, and R is a lower alkyl radical containing from 1 to about 6 carbon atoms, is contacted under nonoxidizing conditions with a heated substrate which is above the decomposition temperature of the organometallic compound. The pure metal is obtained when the compound of the formula I is the sole heat decomposable compound present and deposition is carried out under nonoxidizing conditions. Intermetallic compounds such as copper indium diselenide can be deposited from a copper oxide compound of formula I and a heat decomposable selenium and indium compounds under nonoxidizing conditions. Group II metal oxides and salts, such as barium titanate, are obtainable by deposition from a compound of formula I (and an additional organometallic compound when required) under oxidizing conditions.

The method for protection of vinyl polymers from thermo-oxidative degradation in adding to the vinyl polymers inhibitors, viz., poly(arylene alkylenes) having the general formula --Ar.sub.1 --CH.sub.2).sub.k ].sub.m AR.sub.2 [(CH.sub.2).sub.k Ar.sub.1 ].sub.n,Where Ar.sub.1 and Ar.sub.2 are ##STR1## m+n=2 to 30, k=1 or 2; if k=1, then Ar.sub.1 and Ar.sub.2 are also ##STR2## where X = H; or C.sub.1 - C.sub.4 alkyl; or their hydroperoxides taken in the quantity from 0.01 to 10 per cent of the weight of vinyl polymers. The proposed method ensures prolonged and effective protection of vinyl polymers from thermo-oxidative degradation.

A monomeric foundry binder comprising furfuryl alcohol and resorcinol is disclosed. The binder is substantially anhydrous, generates no nitrogen, is free of formaldehyde odor both in fabrication of the binder and in production of the sand shapes, and in pouring operations. It provides strengths which are better than those normally achieved with polymeric furfuryl alcohol-containing resins, and provides for quicker strip times.
