Abstract: A ring rolling process and corresponding apparatus are disclosed. A ring shaped workpiece is provided, the ring shaped workpiece having a principal axis, an inner radial surface, an outer radial surface, a first axial surface and a second axial surface. The workpiece is subjected to radial pressure between a forming roll 150a acting on the outer radial surface and a mandrel roll 152a, 152b acting on the inner radial surface, at a radial roll bite region. A first axial roll 154a and a second axial roll 156a are provided at the first axial surface and the second axial surface respectively, to subject the workpiece to axial pressure. The first and second axial rolls 154a, 156a are provided at an angular position, measured around the workpiece and with respect to the principal axis, within ±10° of said radial roll bite region. Multiple circumferential constraint rolls are provided around the outer radial surface or inner radial surface. In order to control the cross sectional shape of the workpiece, the mandrel roll 152a, 152b and/or the forming roll 150a has a projecting portion for contact with the workpiece, the projecting portion having an axial extent which is smaller than the axial height of the workpiece, the mandrel roll and/or forming roll being axially moveable relative to the workpiece.

Abstract: A method for the identification of new therapeutic targets and protein interaction sites for use in drug discovery. In particular the invention relates to a method for identifying inhibitors of a cell signalling pathway, the method comprising (1) providing a population of mammalian cells, each mammalian cell having an active cell signalling pathway and comprising: (a) a first heterologous nucleic acid comprising; (i) a nucleotide sequence encoding a first detectable reporter and, (ii) a constitutive regulatory element which is operably linked to the nucleotide sequence; and, (b) a second heterologous nucleic acid comprising: (i) a first nucleotide sequence encoding a repressor molecule, for example an RNA or protein, which inactivates, inhibits or suppresses expression of the first detectable reporter, (ii) a second nucleotide sequence encoding a second detectable reporter; and (iii) a signal-activated regulatory element which is activated by said cell signalling pathway, said signal-activated regulatory element being operably linked to the first and second nucleotide sequences, (2) introducing a library of test compounds into said population of mammalian cells, and; (3) determining the expression of the first and the second detectable reporters in one or more of the population of transfected cells, wherein expression of the first detectable reporter but not the second detectable reporter in a transfected cell is indicative that the test biomolecule expressed by the nucleic acid in the cell inhibits said cell signalling pathway.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a method of aiding in the prognosis of a subject with oesophageal and/or gastro-oesophageal junctional (GOJ) adenocarcinoma, the method comprising the steps of: (a) providing a sample from the subject, (b) determining the expression level of biomarkers TRIM44 and SIRT2 in said sample, and either (i) determining the expression level of biomarker PAPPS2 in said sample; or (ii) determining the expression level of biomarkers WT1 and EGFR in said sample; (c) comparing the expression level of each of said biomarkers to a corresponding reference standard, (d) determining the biomarkers of (b) whose expression is dysregulated compared to the reference standard, (e) inferring from the dysregulated biomarkers identified in (d) the prognosis of 5-year survival, wherein the greater the number of said biomarkers which are dysregulated, the greater the reduction in prognosis of 5-year survival. The invention also relates to kits, uses and devices.

Abstract: An apparatus is provided for harvesting energy from mechanical vibrations with an improved power output. The apparatus comprises a frame (22), a first member (20) comprising a piezoelectric material, a cantilever beam (26) and an electrode. The first member is fixed to the frame at a first position and a second position and extends between the first and second positions. The cantilever beam has a first end fixed to the first member between the first position and the second position and a second end fixed to a proof mass (24). The electrode is fixed to the first member at a position between the first position and the second position. In another aspect, the apparatus may comprise a plurality of proof masses connected to the first member between the first and second positions in a spaced relationship to one another.

Abstract: A method for determining the diffusion of one or more components, the method includes the steps of (i) providing a component fluid flow having one or more components; (ii) providing a blank fluid flow; (iii) bringing the flow (i) into contact with the flow (ii) in a large cross section channel, thereby to generate two laminar flows; (iv) permitting the laminar flows generated in (iii) to flow from the large cross section channel into a small cross section channel; measuring the lateral diffusion of the one or more components from the component flow into the blank fluid flow in the small cross section channel. Also provided is a diffusion method having the steps of measuring the lateral diffusion of the one or more components from the component flow into the blank fluid flow at a plurality of diffusion times.
