Abstract: Apparatus and methods are described for use with a venous system of a subject that includes one or more tributary vessels that flow into a vein at junctions. A blood-pump-catheter (70) includes a material (36) configured to be placed at a downstream location that is downstream of the junctions and to at least partially occlude blood flow through the vein. The material defines a blood-outlet opening (31). A blood pump (24) pumps blood from a region of the vein that is adjacent to the junctions, and through the blood-outlet opening (31). A blood-flow pathway (60) directs upstream venous blood flow from an upstream location that is upstream of the junctions, to downstream of the material (36), without the upstream venous blood flow being pumped by the pump (24). Other applications are also described.

Abstract: Apparatus and methods are described including manufacturing an impeller by forming a structure having first and second bushings at proximal and distal ends of the structure, the first and second bushings being connected to one another by at least one elongate element. The elongate element is caused to radially expand and form at least one helical elongate element, at least partially by axially compressing the structure. The helical elongate element is coated with a coupling agent configured to enhance bonding between the helical elongate element and an elastomeric layer. The coated helical elongate element is coated with the elastomeric layer. Subsequently, an elastomeric film is coupled to the helical elongate element, such that the helical elongate element with the elastomeric film coupled thereto defines a blade of the impeller. Other applications are also described.

A method includes drawing a flow of blood into a blood pump, passing the flow of blood through the blood pump such that heat flow is conducted to the flow of blood via the thermal conductor, and outputting the flow of blood from the blood pump.

Abstract: Systems, assemblies, and related modules for connecting components of medical devices employ connector cables with electrical conductors and optical fibers. A connector assembly for coupling a battery module with a medical system including an implanted or worn medical device includes an input connector and an output connector. The input connector includes metal contact plates, has no moving parts, and is sealed to prevent water or dust ingression into the housing. The output connector includes metal pins to electrically couple to the metal plates of the input connector, a connector cable including electrical conductors coupled to the metal pins configured to transmit electrical power and an optical fiber configured to transmit data, and a latching mechanism disposed at an end of the output connector configured to physically attach the output connector to the housing. The cable body has a substantially flat cross-section.

Abstract: Blood pump systems configured for weaning a patient the blood pump system are described. A blood pump system includes an inflow conduit, an outflow conduit, an outflow conduit pressure sensor, and a controller. The controller controls operation of the blood pump over a first period to provide a first level of support. Subsequent to the first period, the controller controls operation of the blood pump over a second period to provide a second level of support that is less than the first level of support. The controller monitors the outflow conduit pressure during the second period of time. In response detecting a decrease in the pressure of blood within the outflow conduit, the controller controls operation of the blood pump over a third period of time to provide a third level of circulatory support that is greater than the second level of circulatory support.

Abstract: Systems and methods are provided herein for improving connections between a heart pump, such a left ventricular assist device (LVAD), and the heart and/or tubing such as a graft tube. An apical connector including a cylindrical housing and a ring support connected to the housing is described. The apical connector may include a sewing ring to be connected to the patient's heart and a spring positioned within the cylindrical housing to engage a portion of the pump and secure the apical connector to the pump. Alternatively, an apical connector may include an upper and lower housing with locks positioned in channels between the housings and may include a handle and a ring to cause the locks to engage a portion of the pump. A quick connect assembly is also described for efficiently connecting a graft tube to an outlet of a heart pump using a flange with through-holes and protrusions.

Abstract: A blood circulation assist system includes a ventricular assist device (VAD) and a controller. The VAD is attachable to a heart of a patient to pump blood from a ventricle of the heart into a blood vessel of the patient. The VAD includes an impeller, a motor stator operable to rotate the impeller, and an accelerometer generating an accelerometer output indicative of accelerations of the VAD. The controller controls operation of the motor stator to control rotational speed of the impeller based on the accelerometer output.

Abstract: Method and systems control a rotational speed of a blood pump during ventricular diastole. A mechanical circulatory assist system includes a blood pump and a controller. The controller is operable to control a rotation rate of the blood pump in accordance with a first operational mode, monitor a blood flow rate through the blood pump, detect that the blood flow rate through the blood pump during ventricular diastole has decreased to or below an initiation blood flow rate, and, in response to detecting that the blood flow rate through the blood pump during ventricular diastole has decreased to or below an initiation blood flow rate, increase the rotation rate of the blood pump to prevent the blood flow rate through the blood pump during ventricular diastole from falling below a target minimum blood flow rate.
