The process includes forming an electrodeposition coating layer on the substrate by electrodeposition of a curable electrodepositable coating composition over at least a portion of the substrate. A basecoating layer is formed on the electrodeposition coating layer by depositing an aqueous curable basecoating composition directly onto at least a portion of the electrodeposition coating layer. The disclosed process includes applying an aqueous base coat material to the body and drying or partially curing the resultant aqueous basecoat film, applying an aqueous powder slurry clearcoat material to the dried or partially cured aqueous basecoat film (I), and curing the films (I) and (II) by heat or by heat and actinic radiation (dual cure). A method of painting a substrate coated with an electrocoat, wherein the electrocoat includes an average surface roughness equal to or greater than 3 microns, includes applying a two-component sealer onto the electrocoat to form a film having a thickness of from 5 microns to 20 microns. The two-component sealer is partially cured by application of heat to a gel content of from 10 to 50 wt. %. Thereafter, a topcoat, typically including a basecoat and a clearcoat, is applied onto the two-component sealer. Both the two-component sealer and the topcoat are completely cured by application of heat.

The present invention provides an improved multi-layer composite of two or more polymeric layers at least one of which is formed from a thermosetting composition. The composite includes at least a first polymeric layer formed on a substrate and a second polymeric layer over the first polymeric layer, wherein in the absence of a boron-containing compound, the first and second polymeric layers have poor interlayer adhesion. The improvement resides in the inclusion of at least one boron-containing compound in one or both of the first and second polymeric layers in an amount sufficient to improve the interlayer adhesion between the first and second polymeric layers. Also provided is an improved curable coating composition used to form a multi-layer composite coating of two or more cured coating layers, at least one of which is formed from the thermosetting composition. Related methods and coated substrates are also provided.

The present invention relates to a process for producing a multi-coat system on various substrates, particularly automotive bodies. A crosslinkable component of the composition includes an acid functional acrylic copolymer polymerized from a monomer mixture comprising 2 percent to 12 percent of one or more carboxylic acid group containing monomers, percentages based on total weight of the acid functional acrylic copolymer, and 0.2 percent to 2 percent of amorphous silica, percentages based on total weight of the crosslinkable component. The crosslinking component can includes polyisocyanates, melamines, or a combination thereof.
