Abstract: A method for forming a three-dimensional article through successive fusion of parts of a metal powder bed is provided, comprising the steps of: distributing a first metal powder layer on a work table inside a build chamber, directing at least one high energy beam from at least one high energy beam source over the work table causing the first metal powder layer to fuse in selected locations, distributing a second metal powder layer on the work table, directing at least one high energy beam over the work table causing the second metal powder layer to fuse in selected locations, introducing a first supplementary gas into the build chamber, which first supplementary gas comprising hydrogen, is capable of reacting chemically with or being absorbed by a finished three-dimensional article, and releasing a predefined concentration of the gas which had reacted chemically with or being absorbed by the finished three dimensional article.

Abstract: A linear friction welding method capable of accurately controlling a welding temperature and capable of lowering the welding temperature is provided. The present invention is a linear friction welding method comprising: a first step of forming a welded interface by bringing one member into contact with the other member; a second step of repeatedly sliding one member and the other member on the same locus and discharging flash from the welded interface in a state where pressure is applied substantially perpendicularly to the welded interface; and a third step of forming a welded surface by stopping the sliding and setting the pressure to be not less than the yield stress and not more than the tensile strength of one member and/or the other member at a desired welding temperature.

Abstract: A laser welding by-product removal device comprises a housing that includes distal and proximate ends separated along a central axis by a peripheral sidewall. A first plenum circumscribes the peripheral sidewall at the proximate housing end and includes a gas inlet and a first plenum base surface that includes a plurality of gas outlet holes. A second plenum circumscribes the peripheral sidewall between the first plenum and the distal housing end, where the second plenum includes a second plenum base surface, radially inner and outer sidewalls that extend axially distal from the second plenum base surface. The second plenum includes a top surface extending between the radially inner and outer sidewalls, and a by-product outlet in the top surface, where at least one of the second plenum base surface and the radially outer sidewall includes a plurality of by-product inlet holes.

Abstract: A method of inserting a rivet into a workpiece comprises moving the rivet and workpiece relative to one another, along a longitudinal axis of the rivet, so as to drive the rivet into the workpiece. The rivet is rotated about its longitudinal axis, relative to the workpiece, for at least part of the time during which it is in contact with the workpiece. The speed of said rotation, or the speed of movement along the longitudinal axis of the rivet, is altered at least once before driving of the rivet into the workpiece is complete. One axial end of the rivet has a tip for piercing the workpiece, and the rivet has a substantially cylindrical shank extending longitudinally from the tip. The shank has one or more surface irregularities.

Abstract: Medical devices provide metallic connector enclosures. The metallic connector enclosures may be constructed with relatively thin walls in comparison to polymer connector enclosures to aid in miniaturizing the medical device. The metallic connector enclosures may be constructed with interior surfaces that deviate less from an ideal inner surface shape in comparison to polymer connector enclosures to allow for better concentricity of electrical connectors. The metallic connector enclosures may include a panel that allows access to the cavity of the connector enclosure where set screw blocks, lead connectors, spacers, seals, and the like may be located. Furthermore, the lead connectors within the metallic connector enclosures may be separated from the metallic connector enclosure by being positioned within non-conductive seals that reside within features included in cavity walls of the connector enclosure. Similarly, set screw blocks may be separated from the metallic connector enclosure by non-conductive spacers present within the cavity.

Abstract: The present invention disclosed a method of producing a three-dimensional porous tissue in-growth structure. The method includes the steps of depositing a first layer of metal powder and scanning the first layer of metal powder with a laser beam to form a portion of a plurality of predetermined unit cells. Depositing at least one additional layer of metal powder onto a previous layer and repeating the step of scanning a laser beam for at least one of the additional layers in order to continuing forming the predetermined unit cells. The method further includes continuing the depositing and scanning steps to form a medical implant.
