Abstract:
The surface-coated optical fiber of the invention is composed of a fibrous body of a vitreous material, e.g. fused quartz glass, and a coating layer thereon formed of a coating composition comprising an organosiloxane-modified organic polymer, of which the backbone is formed of recurring organic units such as a polybutadiene, an acrylic polymer and the like having modifying pendant groups containing an organosiloxane unit. The workability of the coating composition in the coating application is excellent so that a high uniformity is obtained in the coating layer in comparison with a coating composition comprising an unmodified organic polymer. The coating layer thus formed has a remarkably improved mechanical strength over a coating layer formed of an organopolysiloxane resin alone.

Preferred coating compositions containing an ungelled resin composition of the invention can be cured in the presence of atmospheric moisture and a suitable catalyst at a temperature of less than or equal to 121 degrees C within 3 hours.
Abstract:
Aqueous coating compositions comprise a polymer of defined molecular weight which contains either anionizable or cationizable groups and also certain defined non-ionizable water-soluble moieties (derived for example from polyethylene glycol), water, optionally an organic coupling solvent and optionally either base or acid. The presence of regularly distributed non-ionizable water-soluble moieties enables the selection of aqueous polymer solutions which, on dilution, show a regular relationship between viscosity and solids content. The polymer solutions are useful in the formulation of coating compositions, particularly paints.
Abstract:
The invention relates to a self-crosslinking heat-curable binder, in particular for electrocoating finishes, based on an organic synthetic resin which contains primary and/or secondary hydroxyl groups, esterified carboxyl groups and quaternary ammonium groups and can be diluted with water as a result of partial or complete neutralization with acids. The esterified carboxyl groups are activated in the alcohol component by a substituent which has a negative inductive effect.

A coating composition which comprises (A) a vinylic monomer-copolymerized resin having a hydroxyl group and a carboxyl group and (B) an alkoxylated amine-formaldehyde condensate as a curing agent for the resin (A). When the coating composition is used as a base coating composition and/or as a clear coating composition in the two coat-one bake coating system, the resulting coating film shows excellent weather resistance with good appearance.
Abstract:
A cathodically electrodepositable, self-cross-linkable polymer is a hydroxyalkyl carbamate-containing resin having at least one tertiary amine and at least two hydroxyalkyl carbamate groups per molecule. The polymer is made by reacting an epoxy resin having an average epoxy equivalent weight of from about 300 to about 10,000 with one or more amines having at least one secondary amine group and at least one hydroxyalkyl carbamate group or precursor thereof. Hydrophobic amines may be co-reacted to enhance hydrophobicity of the polymer. An electrodeposition bath is made by acidifying the polymer to form an aqueous dispersion. A low temperature-curable coating is attained by utilization of the polymer with a suitable quaternary or ternary compound catalyst.
