摘要:
A spin-valve magnetoresistive read element has a thin conductive lead layer of high sheet conductivity, high hardness, high melting point, high corrosion resistance and lacking the propensity for smearing, oozing, electromigration and nodule formation. Said lead layer is formed upon the hard magnetic longitudinal bias layer of an abutted junction spin-valve type magnetoresistive read head and said read head is therefore suitable for reading high density recorded disks at high RPM.

An inductive-type write head and its method of fabrication are disclosed. The write head has a vertically separated two-element planar coil of reduced resistance which is the result of forming the lower of the two coils with windings of a greater height and substantially larger cross-sectional area than those of the upper coil. The formation of a lower coil with greater height is possible because of a surface planarization that allows separating the coils by an alumina layer of minimal thickness. This method allows the reduction of coil resistance without the necessity of enlarging the head dimensions. The reduced resistance results in lower power consumption and the elimination of pole tip protrusion caused by excessive heating during operation.

A merged read/write magnetic recording head comprises a low magnetic moment first magnetic shield layer over a substrate. A read gap layer with a magnetoresistive head is formed over the first shield layer. A shared pole comprises a low magnetic moment second magnetic shield layer plated on a sputtered seed PLM layer over the read gap layer, a non-magnetic layer plated over the PLM layer and a HMM lower pole layer plated over the second magnetic shield layer. A write gap layer is formed over the first high magnetic moment pole layer of the shared pole. An upper pole comprises a high magnetic moment pole layer over the write gap layer.

A high performance specular free layer bottom spin valve is disclosed. This structure made up the following layers: NiCr/MnPt/CoFe/Ru/CoFe/Cu/free layer/Cu/Ta or TaO/Al2O3. A key feature is that the free layer is made of a very thin CoFe/NiFe composite layer. Experimental data confirming the effectiveness of this structure is provided, together with a method for manufacturing it and, additionally, its longitudinal bias leads.

A trimmed upper pole piece for a magnetic write head, said pole piece having a tapered profile that is widest at its trailing edge. Such a pole piece is capable of writing narrow tracks with sharply and well defined patterns and minimal overwriting of adjacent tracks. The necessary taper is produced by using NiCr, NiFeCr, Rh or Ru as write gap filling materials which have an etch rate which is substantially equal to the etch rate of the other layers forming the pole piece and are highly corrosion resistant. As a result, the write gap does not protrude to mask the effects of the ion-beam etch used to form the taper.

An MRAM structure is disclosed in which the bottom electrode has an amorphous TaN capping layer to consistently provide smooth and dense growth for AFM, pinned, tunnel barrier, and free layers in an overlying MTJ. Unlike a conventional Ta capping layer, TaN is oxidation resistant and has high resistivity to avoid shunting of a sense current caused by redeposition of the capping layer on the sidewalls of the tunnel barrier layer. Alternatively, the α-TaN layer is the seed layer in the MTJ. Furthermore, the seed layer may be a composite layer comprised of a NiCr, NiFe, or NiFeCr layer on the α-TaN layer. An α-TaN capping layer or seed layer can also be used in a TMR read head. An MTJ formed on an α-TaN capping layer has a high MR ratio, high Vb, and a RA similar to results obtained from MTJs based on an optimized Ta capping layer.

摘要:
Aggressive (i.e. tight tolerance) stitching offers several advantages for magnetic write heads but at the cost of some losses during pole trimming. This problem has been overcome by replacing the alumina filler layer, that is used to protect the stitched pole during trimming, with a layer of electro-plated material. Because of the superior step coverage associated with the plating method of deposition, pole trimming can then proceed without the introduction of stresses to the stitched pole while it is being trimmed.

Problems such as thermal pole tip protrusion result from thermal mismatch between the alumina and pole material during the writing process. This, and similar problems due to inadequate heat dissipation, have been overcome by dividing the bottom shield into two pieces both of which sit on top of a non-magnetic heat sink. Heat generated by the coil during writing is transferred to the non-magnetic heat sink whence it gets transferred to the substrate. With this approach, the head not only benefits from less field disturbance due to the small shield but also improves heat dissipation from the additional heat sink

Present processes used for planarizing a cavity filled with a coil and hard baked photoresist require that a significant amount of the thickness of the coils be removed. This increases the DC resistance of the coil. In the present invention, CMP is terminated as soon as the coils are exposed, allowing their full thickness to be retained and resulting in minimum DC resistance. Application of this process to the manufacture of a planar magnetic write head is described.
