A rolling mill of the present invention includes a mill stand formed by two spaced apart housings. The housings are configured to rotatably hold one of at least two sets of rolls. A hold-down assembly is coupled to the housings. The hold-down assembly includes at least a first pair of hold-down screws and a second pair of hold-down screws. The distance between the screws of the first pair of hold-down screws is less than the distance between the screws of the second pair of hold-down screws. Each pair of hold-down screws is selectively adapted to substantially align with the bearing chocks of an adjacent roll of one of the sets of rolls in the mill stand.

The present invention provides a descaling system for hot strip or plate mills. The descaling system includes upper and lower spray headers which are offset from each other along the pass line. Each spray header is adapted to direct a high-pressure water spray on the metal product to descale the upper or lower surface thereof. The upper and lower spray headers are offset at a distance greater than the length of the product, whereby the spray headers can be sequentially, separately used. The spray headers are coupled to a common drive pump.

Disclosed is a method and apparatus for precisely measuring the position of moving atoms in an atom beam. The method employs atomic resonance imaging in which a spatially varying potential correlates an atomic resonance frequency with the atomic position. The method comprises (a) emptying an atomic beams of all atoms in a predetermined detectable final state; (b) passing the atomic beam through a field which induces atoms in the beam to make a transition from the initial atomic state to the detectable final atomic state, while simultaneously providing a spatially varying potential and wherein the energy of the final atomic state of the atoms is dependent upon the position of the atoms in the spatially varying potential concurrent with the field; and (c) detecting the final atomic state of said atoms to generate a spectrum which corresponds to the position distribution of atoms in the atomic beam. Apparatus for implementing said method of measuring moving atoms is also disclosed.

A concentrate solution tube (14) is interconnected to a dilution assembly (61) containing an aspirator (26). A water supply assembly (69), containing a valve (73) and backflow preventer (74), is connected to the aspirator assembly (26) when dilution of the concentrated product (13) is desired. A discharge tube (68) carries the diluted product from the aspirator assembly (26) to a container (60). Also disclosed is a method for diluting and handling solutions.

The method of controlling strip flatness on a hot strip mill which includes a hot reversing mill as a final reducing stand comprises reducing the thickness of the workpiece by passing it back and forth along a pass line through the hot reversing mill while reducing the roll gap on the mill after each successive pass. The strain developed during rolling is equalized by passing the workpiece through a shape processor having a plurality of upper and lower rolls capable of intermeshing along the pass line and located immediately downstream of the hot reversing mill. The equalizing of the strain through the shape processor occurs during selected intermittent passes and/or through the last pass through the reversing mill.

A preferred cleaning system (10) is disclosed which includes a hydraulic timer valve (22) which is in fluid communication with a cleaning chemical dispenser (14) and a water supply (12). The hydraulic timer valve (22) preferably includes a bearing arrangement (44) which is spring biased toward a first end (56) of a timer housing (52). When a water supply valve (20) is opened, water flows into housing (52) to cause the bearing arrangement (44) to move from its first position to a second position. When the bearing arrangement (44) reaches its second position, water flow from the water supply (12) to the chemical dispenser (14) is prevented. The movement of the bearing arrangement (44) from its first position to its second position takes a preselected period of time determined by the flow resistance produced by a control valve (35) which controls the flow of water to one side of the bearing arrangement (44) of valve (22). When the water supply (12) is blocked, the valve (22) automatically resets. The bearing arrangement (44) is moved from its second position to its first position and the water which formerly coerced the bearing arrangement (44) so as to block the flow of water to the dispenser (14) is forced out of the housing (52) through lines (24 and 38) and vented to the atmosphere.
