Certain ones of the assemblies include a no-go sleeve for interfacing with a no-go shoulder in a casing and an actuating system for releasing the assembly from the no-go sleeve. Other ones of the assemblies include a key for engaging a landing nipple in a casing and a key retractor for retracting the key from the nipple. Still other ones of the assemblies include a key for engaging a no-go shoulder in a casing and a key retractor for retracting the key from the no-go shoulder. The assemblies are particularly useful in drilling and completing wells from a floating drilling rig.

    摘要: A decentralizer for a diverter, a centralizing guide bushing and a downhole-deployable locating and orienting subsystem. The subsystem is capable of three modes of operation: (a) a running mode in which an actuating mandrel is in a first axial limit position with respect to a common mandrel, the actuating mandrel placing first and second double-acting springs in a stowed position wherein locating and orienting keys are retracted radially inwardly with respect to the common mandrel to shield the locating and orienting keys from substantial contact with a surrounding well flow conductor as the common mandrel traverses therethrough, (b) a locating mode in which the actuating mandrel is in an intermediate axial position with respect to the common mandrel, the actuating mandrel placing the first and second double-acting springs in a deployed position resiliently to bias the locating and orienting keys radially outwardly with respect to the common mandrel to seek a locating and orienting profile on an inner surface of a surrounding honed bore within the surrounding well flow conductor, and (c) a set mode in which the actuating mandrel is in a second axial limit position with respect to the common mandrel, the actuating mandrel directly engaging and stiffly retaining the locating and orienting keys in engagement with the locating and orienting profile thereby to fix the common mandrel in a desired location and orientation with respect to the honed bore.

    摘要: A diverter for a subterranean well, a diverter retrieving tool and methods of diverting objects traversing the well and retrieving the diverter. The diverter comprises: (1) a body having a lower portion adapted to be coupled to a diverter anchoring structure and an upper portion having a slanted diverting surface, the diverter adapted to be placed within a main borehole of the subterranean well at a predetermined location and orientation proximate a junction of a lateral borehole with the main borehole, the slanted diverting surface adapted to redirect an object having a particular diameter and coming into contact with the diverter into the lateral borehole and (2) a compliant spring member associated with the slanted diverter surface. The spring member is resiliently retractable toward the slanted diverter surface to allow the object to traverse the junction and enter the lateral borehole, the diverter therefore dynamically adjustable to compensate for an insufficient minimum diameter of a selectable one of the main borehole, junction and lateral borehole. The diverter is configured to receive a flexible finger of the retrieving tool into a central longitudinal shaft therein to engage and retrieve the diverter without having to orient the retrieving tool.

    摘要: A method and apparatus for establishing a fluid plug within a well bore which can then be substantially destroyed upon demand to permit reestablishment of the well within a short period of time thereafter. Increased pressure actuates a plug rupture mechanism which destroys the integrity of the plug and allows the plug to be substantially eliminated from the wellbore within a short period of time thereafter. In described preferred embodiments, the plug is comprised of a salt and sand mixture which is highly resistant to fluid compressive forces but is subject to destruction under shear tension forces. The plug may be encased within a plug sleeve which is, in turn, encased within a plug housing which may be disposed within the well bore. The sleeve is associated within the housing so that fluid may be displaced about the plug sleeve as the housing is disposed into the well bore. When the plug has reached the proper position within the well bore, the plug sleeve may be set within the housing such that fluid flow is stopped. A shear member is contained within the plug sleeve and detachably connected thereto. When required, the shear member may be released from the surrounding plug sleeve and forced against the plug to substantially destroy the integrity of the plug through introduction of shear tension forces within the plug structure and reestablish fluid flow through the housing. The plug is further dissolved into well bore fluids to substantially destroy it.

    摘要: A straight bore metal-to-metal seal for connecting a tubing string to the mandrel of a well packer has a radially deflectable sealing member compressed between the internal bore surface of a tubular seal receptacle and the tubular body portion of a seal mandrel. The seal receptacle has a radially stepped sealing surface which is engaged by the deflectable sealing member in the operative sealing position. The inside bore of the deflectable sealing member is positively sealed against the outside surface of the seal mandrel by a pair of metal V-rings. A positive seal is also produced by engagement of the deflectable sealing member against the radially stepped bore of the seal receptacle. The deflectable sealing member is loaded by radial compression forces produced as a result of interference engagement of the deflectable sealing member against the radially stepped bore.

    摘要: Disclosed is a new and novel poppet type safety valve useful in flow conduits in fluid storage well systems. The safety valve is programmable to automatically close at various predetermined ratios of production mass flow rate-ambient pressure to prevent undesirable high flow rates or uncontrolled out-flow of fluid stored in a reservoir if the flow conduit or wellhead is damaged. This safety valve is lowered into and locked and sealed in a landing nipple in the well conduit. The safety valve has a variable bias which biases the valve member toward open position and a variable flow restrictor which is automatically actuated by a sensing actuator continually sensing reservoir pressure to vary the restricted annular flow area between the valve housing and inside of the well conduit for closure at the desired flow rate. The valve element has a through flow passage with locking recesses in the flow passage into which the sensing actuator may be releasably locked. The sensing actuator responds to changes in stored gas density and ambient pressure and automatically varies the restricted flow area accordingly. The safety valve may be operated to disconnect the valve housing, with or without the sensing actuator, for expending downwardly in the well conduit.

    摘要: A hydraulically set retrievable well packer, with dual mandrels connectable into well tubing, for sealing the tubing to and anchoring the packer body in well casing utilizing a unique c-ring slip system. The mandrels are slidably connected for limited longitudinal movement in the packer body, which eliminates tubing spacing-out and temperature length change problems. There is a separate mandrel through the packer body for conducting flow from the casing annulus below the set packer. An internal lock system is provided to retain the packer in set position. If tubing parts above the set packer, the mandrels are supported and metal-to-metal sealed in the packer preventing tubing below the packer from falling. The packer may be retrieved by cutting one or both mandrels above the packing elements and picking up to release an internal connector which allows the slips and packing element to retract and the packer to be retrieved from the well. The anchoring, sealing and releasing means of this invention can be readily adapted for use on a single or multiple mandrel well packer.

    摘要: Remote operation of downhole tools in a subterranean wellbore is performed by inserting untethered, mobile devices sequentially into the wellbore. The mobile devices can include motive means, power supply, communication and data storage means, etc. In one embodiment, the method comprises maneuvering a first mobile device into proximity with a downhole tool, the device powering the tool. The first device is then removed, such as by flowing up or dissolving. The now-powered tool is used to perform a test or other operation. A second mobile device is maneuvered into proximity with the downhole tool and data is transferred. The second device is retrieved with the data or, using on-board logic devices, provides “if-then” commands to the downhole tool. Alternately, a third mobile device can be used to power and transfer commands to the tool. The method can be used for various tasks, such as opening bypass ports on ICD valves.
