A pulse generator produces a voltage pulse for an inductive or capacitive load, in particular for an electrostatic dust extractor, having an energy-storage capacitor which is connected in series with a controllable switch. The switch is self-opening at the zero crossing of the current flowing to the load, in a series of tuned circuits. The energy-storage capacitor is discharged to the load by closing and opening the controllable switch in a single discharging process during only one half oscillation period of the series tuned circuit.

Flame-hydrolytically produced titanium dioxide mixed oxide having a BET surface of 10 to 150 m.sup.2 /g and 1 to 30% by weight aluminum oxide or 1 to 30% by weight silicon dioxide is produced by evaporating aluminum chloride or silicon tetrachloride, transferring the evaporated aluminum chloride or silicon tetrachloride, together with an inert gas, into the mixing chamber of a burner, mixing them with hydrogen, air and gaseous titanium tetrachloride, burning the resulting 4-component mixture in the reaction chamber of the burner, and separating the titanium dioxide mixed oxide from the gaseous reaction products.

Silicon-aluminum mixed oxide powder which is flame-hydrolytically produced and has a composition of 65 to 85% by weight Al.sub.2 O.sub.3, remainder SiO.sub.2 and an amorphous structure, in which each primary particle contains components of SiO.sub.2 and of Al.sub.2 O.sub.3, the primary particles are between 7 and 80 nm, preferably 10 and 40 nm in size and the specific surface of the powder is between 20 and 200 m.sup.2 /g. The powder is used for the production of mullite and sintered compacts manufactured from it.

Titanium dioxide compacts are produced by intensively mixing pyrogenically produced titanium dioxide in the presence of deionized water with a wetting agent and/or with a base and/or optionally with a binder and/or optionally with an auxiliary deformation agent and/or optionally with a pore former, extruding the mass thus obtained at pressures between 5 and 100 bars to form shaped articles, drying the shaped articles at temperatures between 50.degree. and 120.degree. C. and subsequently calcining the shaped articles in the ambient air at temperatures of 400.degree. to 700.degree. C. for 1 to 5 hours.

The density of a stream of tobacco particles at the underside of a foraminous belt conveyor is monitored by an array of X-ray detectors to generate signals each denoting the density of a different thin layer in successive increments of the stream. Such signals are processed into signals denoting the density of the entire stream, the filling power of tobacco, and the quantity of the surplus in the stream. The processed signals are used to adjust the trimmer which removes the surplus, to adjust the distributor which feeds the particles to the stream, to regulate the hardness of cigarettes and to adjust the quantity of the surplus.

An apparatus for determining the transit time of ultrasonic pulses in a fluid has two spaced apart electro-acoustic converters (11, 20). A transmitter signal proportional to the sound pressure is applied via a controllable delay circuit (23) to a multiplication circuit (25) to which the received signal is also passed. The product signal is in turn passed to a transit time detector circuit (10) (FIG. 1).

A continuous rod-like filler is formed in a cigarette rod making machine on an endless foraminous belt conveyor by depositing a row of spaced-apart batches consisting of a first type of tobacco at one side of the conveyor, holding the batches by suction, and showering tobacco particles of a second type onto and/or into the spaces between the batches. The density of successive increments of the filler is monitored by a pneumatic and/or radiation type detector, and the thus obtained density signals are used to generate control signals which regulate the density of the filler as well as control signals which are used to influence the batches, if and when necessary. For this purpose, the density signals can be processed to single out those which are attributable to monitoring of the density of successive batches, and the singled out density signals are then analyzed and used to vary one or more parameters of the batches.
