Abstract:
A method and apparatus for adjusting the coating diameter and/or thickness during production of an elongated member being coated. In the preferred embodiment, the elongated member is an optical fiber. The apparatus includes a coating unit having a sizing die with an orifice through which the elongated member is conveyed, the diameter the orifice being adjustable. This is achieved by providing a helical spring in the sizing die with the inside of the spring defining the orifice. A tensioning mechanism adjusts the tension of the spring by causing relative rotation between opposite ends of the spring to change the diameter of the orifice. The apparatus further includes a measuring device, disposed downstream of the coating unit, for measuring the diameter of the coating; and a controller for adjusting the diameter of the orifice in response to the measured diameter of the coating.

A method for coating an electric coil of a workpiece. A step of the method includes applying a curable coating material to the electric coil of the workpiece. Another step includes externally vibrating the workpiece before the applied curable coating material has cured. An embodiment of apparatus for coating an electric coil of a workpiece includes a mechanism for applying a curable coating material to the electric coil of the workpiece and also includes a mechanism for externally vibrating the workpiece before the applied curable coating material has cured.
Abstract:
An apparatus for monitoring deposition of a liquid-to-pasty medium on a substrate has a sensor fitted with two electrodes and an electronic circuit connected to the sensor for generating a signal which is characteristic of the substrate and the medium. The electronic circuit measures the imaginary component of the electrical permittivity of the substrate moving, together with the medium, between the two electrodes, and uses the measured value to determine the characteristic signal.
Abstract:
The system and method of the present invention determines the rate of application of liquid glue to corrugated board on a corrugator. A sensor employing the principle of infrared absorption measures the amount of water on the surface of the glue roll upstream of the point of application of the glue to the corrugated board's medium. A second sensor employing the principle of infrared absorption measurers the amount of water on the surface of the glue roll downstream of the point of application of the glue to the corrugated board's medium. Using calibration coefficients the two sensor's output signals are then converted into film thickness measurements. The downstream film thickness measurement is then subtracted from the upstream film thickness measurement to compute the reduction in film thickness caused by the intervening application of the glue to the medium.
Abstract:
The inventive mechanism adjusts a working distance between a tool and a work surface. The provision for automatically setting and adjusting the working distance between two parts of an apparatus, possibly a coating apparatus, permits the mechanism to adjust in real time for unknown and possibly random variations in the dimensions of the work surface, the apparatus supporting the work surface, and imperfect leveling of the tool or the work surface. In a preferred embodiment, the inventive mechanism is used to accurately set and maintain the working distance of a dispenser above a substrate so as to provide that a consistent coating thickness is applied across the substrate. The mechanism preferably employs direct precision distance sensing means independent of the motor of drive means to continuously measure the working distance in real time with a high degree of resolution and accuracy. When the sensor reports that the working distance has deviated from the ideal setting, a control system employs a standard P.I.D. control scheme to precisely restore the ideal working distance. The mechanism may perform the working distance control function using the main or host software, or, more preferably delegate this function to a dedicated processor for the duration of the process during which working distance is being precisely adjusted. The host preferably resumes control of the drive means in the direction of the working distance once the precision adjustment scheme is concluded, and may then perform larger scale motion of the tool using feedback from the position reporting means integral to the motor or drive means.
Abstract:
The amount of coating dispensed by a metering rod type applicator such as used on size press coater for applying coating onto the size press rolls can be reduced by vibrating the metering rod. Such vibration of the metering rod has been found to reduce the thickness of the film passing through the metering nip of the coating applicator for a given metering nip rod pressure.

Products and methods for controlling the porosity and permeation of a web are provided using a curable thixotropic shear thinnable polymer composition that preferably encapsulates a plurality of fibers of the web and/or forms an internal layer within the web. Webs suitable for several different uses are featured, for example medical garments resistant to permeation by a virus or bacteria. The effective pore size of the web is controlled by regulating various factors such as the thickness of the polymer composition encapsulating the fibers and the thickness and placement of the internal polymer layer. Other factors include the polymer density, structure, and crosslinking orientation, as well as the diffusion, permeation and sorption of the polymer.
Abstract:
The present invention includes novel barrier webs that have certain desirable physical qualities such as water resistance, increased durability, improved barrier qualities and the like. The present invention further comprises a barrier web comprising a web that has been treated with a curable shear thinned thixotropic polymer composition, the fabric being adapted to be substantially impermeable to liquids, permeable to gases and impermeable to microorganisms. The barrier webs of the present invention are either impermeable to all microorganisms or are impermeable to microorganisms of certain sizes. The present invention also includes fabrics that are capable of either selective binding certain microorganisms, particles or molecules depending upon what binding partners are incorporated into the polymer before application to the fabric.
Abstract:
In a system for monitoring and controlling the thickness of a laminate, an apparatus is provided to apply material for forming a material layer onto a web so that a laminate is formed. The tip of a knife and the surface of the web upon which the material is applied define a space, and the knife is movable relative to the web to vary the size of the space. The web coated with the material layer is drawn past the knife to form a desired thickness material layer. A measuring apparatus measures whether the thickness of the material layer plus the thickness of the web is equal to a predetermined value. The tip of the knife is moved relative to the web to adjust the thickness of the material layer in response to a signal from the measuring apparatus. A method of monitoring and controlling the thickness of a laminate is also described.
Abstract:
Apparatus for preparing and dispensing thermoplastic resin has a conveyor or extruder with a chamber provided with heating elements, a conveyor or extruder screw mounted in the chamber and connected to a drive motor, a resin inlet and a resin outlet. To ensure the intended continuous dispensing of the resin even during intermittent operation, a control device is provided having inputs connected to a resin pressure sensor, a conveyor speed of rotation sensor and a resin temperature sensor. Intended values for the conveyor speed, resin pressure and resin temperature are supplied to the control device, which regulates the pressure during interruption of the dispensing of the resin and effects a speed regulation or a pressure regulation with a superimposed speed regulation during dispensing of the resin. For plasticizing of the resin, which is supplied in solid, preferably granular form, and since the conveyor geometry by the heating elements is required. The temperature at the outlet is monitored by the temperature sensor and regulated by the control device.
