Pullulan is precipitated from an aqueous solution by mixing with a hydrophilic organic solvent incapable of dissolving pullulan. Solid pullulan is then separated from the liquid component of the dispersion by feeding the dispersion into a V-type disk press having a pair of discoid screens arranged so that the distance between them decreases as they are rotated. The pullulan dispersion is pressed by the discoid screens, recovering the liquid component through the screens. The resulting low-liquid-content pullulan continues to rotate together with the screens to an outlet, where it is discharged from the press.

Pullulan forms an association complex with PEG in a hydrous system. The assocation complex, as well as its pullulan and PEG components, exerts a decreased solubility in water. The association reduces or even eliminates the excessively high water-solubility, threading and stickiness of pullulan so that this extends the uses of pullulan and PEG such as those in gradually disintegrable- and sustained release-shaped articles for consumer's products, toiletries, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and feeds.

Pullulan reacts with alkylating agents such as dimethyl sulfate, diethyl sulfate, ethylene oxide, and propylene oxide to form the corresponding lower-alkyl or hydroxy-lower-alkyl ethers which are much less soluble in water than pullulan, but retain sufficient sensitivity to moisture to be biodegradable when they do not contain more than one, and preferably not more than 0.5, alkoxy or hydroxyalkoxy group per glucose unit in the pullulan molecule. Films and fibers of the ethers are mechanically strong and are readily plasticised with water-soluble polyhydric alcohols. The ethers can be molded above their softening temperature in conventional injection or compression molding equipment. The films are practically impervious to atmospheric oxygen and suitable as packaging material.
