A process and an apparatus for treating exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine include at least two exhaust-gas treatment modules. An exhaust gas stream can be at least partly deflected depending on a load state of the internal combustion engine in such a way that at least parts of the exhaust gas flow through one or more modules. This makes it possible to advantageously construct and operate even an exhaust gas system of large-volume internal combustion engines, in which conversion and treatment of the exhaust gas is carried out in individual modules, even in no-load operation, basically at very low exhaust gas mass flow rates. The individual modules can be adapted to various load levels of the internal combustion engine. A rail-borne vehicle and a water-borne vehicle having the apparatus are also provided.

An exhaust gas throttle valve disposed in the exhaust system of an engine, wherein the center axis of rotation of a valve shaft 5 is set at a position deviated from the center axis of the exhaust gas passage, and two recessed portions 11 are symmetrically formed in the circumferential portion of a valve body 4 by cutting the surface thereof. The positions where the recessed portions 11 are formed are on the side of the center axis of the exhaust gas passage beyond the center axis 12 of rotation, and at where the peripheral portion of the valve body 4 faces the edge portions 9 where insertion holes 8 for the valve shaft 5 are opened in the exhaust gas passage. At these positions, the distance is a minimum between the peripheral portion of the valve body 4 and the edge portions 9. The recessed portions 11 work to increase the gap relative to the edge portions 9 at that positions. It is therefore made possible to approximate the peripheral portion of the valve body 4 to the tubular wall of the exhaust gas passage 2 when the exhaust gas throttle valve is closed preventing the valve body 4 and the edge portions 9 from coming in contact together despite of the thermal expansion.

For example, the particulate load of a particulate filter is monitored and a road speed of the vehicle is determined. If the particulate load is greater than a particulate load threshold and the road speed is greater than a road speed threshold, regeneration of the particulate filter is initiated. As another example, the sulfur oxide load (SOx) of a NOx catalyst is also monitored, and if the SOx load is greater than a SOx threshold while the particulate filter is being regenerated, regeneration of the particulate filter is terminated and SOx regeneration of the NOx catalyst is initiated.

The bottom layer includes a supported catalyst comprising platinum and palladium particles or palladium and gold particles. The middle layer includes zeolites. The top layer includes a supported catalyst comprising platinum and palladium particles. The use of zeolite mixture in the middle layer further improves CO and HC reduction performance in comparison with using zeolite of a single type. A learned value is updated based upon a catalyst bed temperature under a temperature increase control and the target bed temperature so that the learned value corresponds to a difference between the respective temperatures. Whether the learned value is out of a proper range or not is determined whenever the learned value is updated. Abnormality is determined when determination that the learned value is out of the proper range is made over several successive updates of the learned value.
