Provided are additives of formula I for use in hydrocarbonaceous compositions, such as petroleum or liquid fuels: (I) wherein R1, R2, R3, R4, and R5 are as defined herein. The additives improve the corrosion resistance of the compositions and, when the composition is biodiesel, also improve microbial resistance. The additives further enhance the antimicrobial efficacy of any added biocides contained in such compositions.

A continuous process for the production of a phenolic-based cyanate ester resin is provided and includes the steps of: feeding a phenolic organic compound, a trialkylamine and a cyanogen halide into a continuous, plug-flow type reactor; causing the reactants to flow through and react in the reactor over a period of time defined as a residence time; continuously reacting the phenolic organic compound, the triallckylamine and the cyanogen halide in the reactor; and maintaining a temperature in the reactor of between about -75.degree. C. to about 0.degree. C. The reactor has a length which is equal to or greater than ten times its internal diameter. The mol equivalent concentration of the cyanogen halide is greater than the mol equivalent concentration of the trialkylamine, and the mol equivalent of the trialkylamine is greater than the mol equivalent of the phenolic organic compound. The reactants are resident for a long enough time in the reactor to achieve at least substantial conversion of the phenol groups to cyanate ester groups, but for short enough a time to substantially suppress undesirable side reactions. The phenolic-based cyanate ester resins prepared by the continuous process may contain as much as 95 percent by weight or more cyanate ester groups.

This invention relates to vinyl ether-based coatings for which properties such as color stability, thermal stability, mechanical stability, hydrolytic stability, and resistance to embrittlement may be maintained and properties hydrogen generation and blocking are minimized. The coatings comprise a vinyl ether-containing composition polymerizable by actinic, gamma ray, or electron beam radiation comprising: (a) an oligomer or a mixture of oligomers which are monofunctional, multifunctional, or a mixture of both monofunctional and multifunctional and which have a reactive functionality chosen from the group consisting of epoxy, acrylate, vinyl ether, maleate, or mixtures thereof; (b) monomers which are monofunctional, multifunctional, or a mixture of both monofunctional and multifunctional monomers and which have a reactive functionality chosen from the group consisting of epoxy, acrylate, vinyl ether, maleate, or mixtures thereof, wherein at least one of (a) or (b) must contain a vinyl ether functionality; (c) a photoinitiator, optionally including a sensitizer, chosen from the group consisting of a cationic photoinitiator and a radical photoinitiator; and (d) a thermal oxidation stabilizer. The composition also comprises additives including as hydrogen stabilizers; mixtures of hindered phenols, organic sulfides or disulfides, and transition metal salts of organic compounds.

Vinyl ether terminated ester oligomers having a range of molecular weights are prepared by reacting a vinyl ether terminated polybasic ester with a polyol in the presence of a catalyst. Continual removal of a hydroxy monovinyl ether avoids formation compounds containing acetal moieties. Alternatively, a polybasic ester is chain extended with a polyol with continual removal of the alcohol by-product. Then, the terminal ester moieties are end capped with a monohydroxy vinyl ether. The oligomers have application in coatings and the like.

A method to impart coffee stain resistance to polyamide fibers such as those found in textile substrates (e.g., carpets). The method includes preparing an aqueous dispersion of charged microfine beads of either (i) a copolymer selected from the group consisting of a hydrolyzed aromatic-containing vinyl ether maleic anhydride copolymer, a half ester of an aromatic-containing vinyl ether maleic anhydride copolymer, and mixtures thereof, or (ii) an aromatic-containing acrylate copolymerized with an acid selected from the group consisting of acrylic acid and maleic acid, immersing the polyamide fiber in the aqueous dispersion so that the beads contact and coat the fiber via an electrostatic attraction. The aqueous dispersion is prepared by dissolving the polymer into a water-soluble solvent to form a solution, injecting the solution into water, and evaporating the solvent.
