    摘要: A pyrode converts near-infrared light to an electric field that wirelessly stimulates nerve tissue at one or more locations in a host body, such as in a retina, a cochlea, a heart axon, or a motor nerve. Partial vision is restored when a pyrode implanted in a retina is activated by a scanner. Only the pyrode is implanted in the retina, whereas all other components remain external to the host body. Nerves other than the retina are stimulated by a pyrode coupled to a source of photonic energy by an optical conduit. In one preferred embodiment the photonic energy source is implanted in the host body. In another preferred embodiment, photonic energy from an external source is piped to the pyrode by way of an optical conduit via a percutaneous lead. Electrooptic diverters enable sequential activation of multiple pyrodes branched from a main conduit.

    摘要: This invention is for a single lamina biaxial transducer-made of an electrodeformable material. Several methods form making biaxial transducers are taught. The biaxial transducer has responsivity vectors which are directed along radial lines from the axis and change in in intensity with distance from the axis so that when an electric field is applied the transducer will biaxially deform. The biaxial lamina can be stacked with a common electrode between them. Biaxers can be used for reducing stress between layers in bodies. They are also useful in deforming bodies and for making pumps.

    摘要: This invention relates to an actuator which changes its length without changing its width or breadth dimensions. Four shear electrodeformable bodies 4 are placed symmetrically on two faces of a central electrode 6. Each body also has a connecting electrode 8, attached to the electrodeformable body, thus forming a tetramorph which is the basic building block of the actuator. Each connecting electrode allows the tetramorphs to be attached to each other in layers and stacks to the desired dimensions of the actuator. Two of the electrodeformable bodies in the top half of the tetramorph are polarized to shear in one direction and the two electrodeformable bodies in the bottom half are polarized to shear in the opposite direction. If the shear in the electrodeformable bodies is up and down the tetramorph acts as a lifter. If the shear in the electrodeformable bodies is sideways the tetramorph is a tangenter or axier.

    摘要: The present invention is useful for quickly releasing an object which is being moved by an actuator. Generally actuators of the piezoelectric type move objects slowly. For applications where an object must be quickly moved such as when releasing brakes or reinserting a control rod in a reactor core an actuator should have a quick release feature. The invention uses a set of actuators which contact a bolt and moves the bolt with smooth walking motion. The bolt in turn is driven by the actuators such that it engages an object with smooth walking motion to move or position the object. When the object is to be released the actuators are removed from contact from the bolt thereby releasing the object.

    摘要: A light weight, efficient, and compact piezoelectric rotary union system is provided for joining structures such as space station modules. The system comprises piezoelectric actuators attached to a first structure that engage and rotate a ring attached to a second structure. The actuators position and rotate the ring by non-sliding, smooth walking motion that provides high mechanical efficiency, long life, and negligible electrical noise. Electrical conductors embedded in the ring and the actuator traction surfaces transmit electric currents and signals between the structures. Moderate traction pressure and large contact area substantially eliminate contact heating and associated vacuum welding. The piezoelectric actuators generate relatively large translational forces at relatively low speeds. The absence of conventional rolling bearings eases connection and disconnection of the rotary union. Piezoelectric actuators with integral sensors can control the shape and stress of a relatively light and flexible ring, and can actively reduce or cancel structural vibrations.

    摘要: An apparatus and method for rapidly and accurately positioning an optical surface comprises at least one piezoelectric element 10 with an optical surface 16 located thereon and means 12,30 for applying an electric field to the piezoelectric element 10. The piezoelectric element 10 is piezoelectrically polarized along a first axis and the electric field is supplied along a second axis perpendicular to the first axis. Thus, piezoelectric shear deformation of the piezoelectric element occurs and there is rotation of the optical surface 16 about a third axis which is perpendicular to both the first and second axes. The deformation is sufficient to alter the direction of incident radiation and to alter the direction and distribution of diffracted incident radiation after interaction with the optical surface 16. Varying the magnitude of the electric field alters the magnitude of the deformation thereby accurately positioning the optical surface 16.

    摘要: A method is provided for producing a heated laminated windshield construction. Initially, a transparent material to be provided as the outer layer of such a laminated windshield is selected. A transparent basecoat is applied on the inner major surfce of the outer layer. A quantity of electroconductive metal is deposited onto the basecoated surface to form a metal strike coat. A portion of the metal strike coat is masked so that unmasked portions of the strike coat comprise the pattern of the electroconductive metal film runs to be formed on the inner major surface. An electroconductive metal is electroplated onto the unmasked portions of the strike coat. Portions of the strike coat onto which no metal was electroplated are removed to thereby leave on the inner major surface of the layer a plurality of spaced apart electroconductive metal film runs comprising electroplated metal and the portion of the metal strike coat beneath the electroplated metal. A major surface of a transparent material is then bonded to the inner surface of the outer layer to thereby sandwich the spaced apart electroconductive metal film runs between the layers.
