Combustion chambers are filled with pressurized mixtures of combustible gases and diluents. Elongated chambers have insulating walls and spaced electrodes. Some contain liquid or particulate ablatable materials or ablatable liners. Others extend fuzes between the electrodes and are filled with pressurized gases. Gas is removed from the particulate material. Die cavities may be precompressed during filing of chambers with pressurized gas. Igniting the combustible gases or creating arcs between the electrodes produces rapidly expanding high pressure resultant gases for driving pistons and movable dies and rapidly compressing die cavities. Pressures in the chambers are contained, or pistons are restrained until releasing and driving the pistons. Large area pistons drive smaller movable dies.

Limited partnerships formed for specified public purposes, such as qualified low-income and elderly housing construction and services, are federally tax advantaged. In accordance with the present invention, tax credits and/or passive losses are leveraged by being directed into a method of funding charitable works, for instance school construction projects. A $1 million investment in a qualifying tax credit and/or passive loss plan, with recoupment of the investment after 13 years, will return 8.05% after taxes over 13 years if 50% of the tax credit amounts are donated to a qualified charity or public entity; this results in a net benefit to the donor of $1,759,450 and a total contribution to the charitable entity of $615,000. That contribution can, in accordance with the invention, fund the issuance and retirement of municipal bonds secured principally by the contribution, sufficient for a school construction project of about $500,000.

Dispersions of titanium dioxide pigments with improved long-term resistance to pigment settling and precipitation are disclosed. The pigment dispersions are formed by chemically grafting vinyl and/or acrylic polymers to nitrocellulose in dispersions of nitrocellulose and titanium dioxide pigments. Nitrocellulose forms a loose association with titanium dioxide in dispersion. The chemical grafting improves the precipitation and settling resistance of nitrocellulose, and thus the precipitation and settling resistance of the associated titanium dioxide.

A high voltage switch contact structure capable of interrupting high voltage, high current AC and DC circuits. The contact structure confines the arc created when contacts open to the thin area between two insulating surfaces in intimate contact. This forces the arc into the shape of a thin sheet which loses heat energy far more rapidly than an arc column having a circular cross-section. These high heat losses require a dramatic increase in the voltage required to maintain the arc, thus extinguishing it when the required voltage exceeds the available voltage. The arc extinguishing process with this invention is not dependent on the occurrence of a current zero crossing and, consequently, is capable of rapidly interrupting both AC and DC circuits. The contact structure achieves its high performance without the use of sulfur hexafluoride.

A ball and socket trailer hitch with a throat that is capable of automatically seating and locking a telescoping member capable of lateral swinging movement. The hitch allows a stationary towing vehicle having been imprecisely aligned with a stationary trailer to be coupled without realigning either the trailer or towing vehicle, and then, in one backing motion of the towing vehicle, automatically aligning and locking the hitch into a towing configuration. The preferred embodiment is made up of a frame, a frusto-pyramidally shaped throat, a matingly frusto-pyramidally shaped telescoping member to which a coupling structure which is accepted by the trailer is affixed, an elongated rail, a trunnion pivotally linking the rail to the throat, a locking-pin assembly, and a safety pin. The elongated rail is removably attached to the rear and narrowed portion of the throat by a removable trunnion, which permits the rail, which extends beyond the throat opening, to pivot laterally within the confines of the throat. The telescoping member is capable of being inserted into the throat and onto the rail, whereby the telescoping member may ride and provide the means by which the coupling structure can be extended and coupled with a mating trailer structure after having positioned the towing vehicle into a close proximity to the trailer.
