Abstract: A vehicle occupant safety system includes temperature, ambient, and interior monitoring modules. The temperature monitoring module includes at least one temperature sensor. The temperature monitoring module is configured to detect temperatures in zones within an interior of a vehicle. The ambient temperature sensor is configured to detect an ambient temperature within the interior of the vehicle. The interior monitoring module is configured to: based on the detected temperatures of the zones, determine for the zones at least one of a temperature gradient over time or a temperature gradient over space; determine if the ambient temperature is outside a predetermined range; and in response to the ambient temperature being outside the predetermined range and based on the at least one of a temperature gradient over time or a temperature gradient over space, detecting an occupant in the vehicle and performing a countermeasure to prevent an injury to the occupant.

Abstract: A medication dispensing system is provided and includes a medicine transfer device (MTD) and a controller. The MTD transfers medicine between first and second containers. The first container initially stores medicine. The controller: determines a first predetermined amount of medicine to be dispensed from the medicine dispensing system; causes the MTD to discharge a second predetermined amount of the medicine from the first container onto the MTD, and transfer a third predetermined amount of the medicine from the MTD to the second container; subsequent to the transfer of the third predetermined amount, determine whether the second container has greater than or equal to the first predetermined amount; and if the second container has less than the first predetermined amount, cause the MTD to transfer a portion of the medicine on the MTD into the second container or discharge a portion of the medicine in the first container onto the MTD.

Abstract: A method for creating a nanostructure according to one embodiment includes depositing material in a template for forming an array of nanocables; removing only a portion of the template such that the template forms an insulating layer between the nanocables; and forming at least one layer over the nanocables. A nanostructure according to one embodiment includes a nanocable having a roughened outer surface and a solid core. A nanostructure according to one embodiment includes an array of nanocables each having a roughened outer surface and a solid core, the roughened outer surface including reflective cavities; and at least one layer formed over the roughened outer surfaces of the nanocables, the at least one layer creating a photovoltaically active p-n junction. Additional systems and methods are also presented.
