A soft multicomponent compound comprising a styrenic block copolymer having good elastomeric properties, a paraffinic oil, a crystalline polyolefin and a metallocene polyolefin having a density from 0.86 to 0.91, a molecular weight distribution less than 3, and good distribution of ethylene and from 12% to 30% by weight of one or more .alpha.-olefin monomers having from 4 to 12 carbon atoms. The metallocene polyolefin partly replaces the styrenic block copolymer in conventional soft compounds and provides the desired softness at significantly lower oil contents, thus avoiding surface tackiness and oil extractability.

A thermoplastic elastomer composition comprising a block copolymer having at least two resinous endblocks and a high 1,2-addition butadiene midblock, a paraffin oil and a crystalline polyolefin. The composition exhibits greater softness, better processability and better elastic properties as compared with similar compositions made with normal amounts of a 1,2-addition. Compositions are useful for utilities such as overmolding into hard substrates, grips, medical tubing and miscellaneous rubbery articles.

In a process for producing hydrogenated block copolymers of conjugated dienes and/or vinyl aromatic hydrocarbons which comprises anionically polymerizing the monomers in an inert hydrocarbon solvent in the presence of an alkali metal initiator whereby a polymer cement is produced, contacting the cement with hydrogen under hydrogenation conditions in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst, and then removing the hydrogenation catalyst residue by washing the polymer cement with water or an aqueous acid, the improvement which comprises reducing the viscosity of the polymer cement by polymerizing the block copolymer under conditions such that the vinyl content of the polymer produced in the polymerization step is in the range from 45 to 80 percent by weight.

This invention provides oil gel compositions which comprise a hydrogenated styrene-butadiene-styrene (SEBS) block copolymer (although other vinyl aromatic hydrocarbons may be used) which has an overall weight average molecular weight of from 30,000 to 300,000, a styrene block weight average molecular weight of from 4000 to 35,000, and a vinyl content of at least 45% by weight (% wt), preferably 45 to 90%, and an oil and, optionally, a polyolefin wax and/or an extender liquid. For every 100 parts by weight of copolymer, there should be at least 900 parts of oil or a mixture of oil and polyolefin wax and/or an extender liquid.
