Abstract:
An accelerated weathering test apparatus of the type used to concentrate solar radiation upon test specimens including a fixture connected to a target board including a frame spaced from the target board a predetermined distance by a plurality of stand-offs and having at least one opening defined therein and a transparent element connected to the frame in alignment with each at least one opening in a covering orientation such that the solar radiation from a reflecting solar concentrator impinges upon the test specimens. The predetermined distance is configured such that the frame functions as an extension of a deflector and an operating temperature of the test specimens is shielded from external influences.
Abstract:
Reading of fluorescent arrays (103) in clinical settings is made possible by a reader (110) constructed to employ dark field illumination of the array, and mapping an image of the array onto a solid state sensor array (146) with image dimensions (D;) of the same order magnitude as the dimensions (D( ) of the fluorescent array, preferably with reduction of image. High intensity illumination is employed, non uniformities of which being compensated by normalization employing intensity calibration features (164) in the array itself, that are sensed during imaging of the array. Preferably high intensity light emitting diodes (122, 132, 402, 404), such as used in traffic lights, are employed for excitation of the array, preferably the excitation being introduced to the array via a solid internally reflecting homogenizer (130). Intermediate depth of field collection and imaging optics enable substantial collection of light, with NA in the range of 0.30 to 0.60, preferably in the range of 0.4 to 0.55. The resultant relatively large depth of field is in some advantageous cases compensated by absorbing light that tends to travel beyond the spots being imaged and would otherwise create noise fluorescence, the absorption produced e.g., by an opaque metal oxide coating (304) that is interposed between a substrate (302), preferably an ultra-thin substrate, on which the array lies, and the much thicker glass or other rigid support (306). For clinical purposes the arrays comprise fewer than 1000 spots, as is appropriate for protein, one example being an array of fewer than 500 spots. Relatively large spot sizes are employed, i.e. of the order of at least 80 or 100 micron diameter spots or preferably larger, 150 or 300 micron spots. Resolution of such spots to at least 50 pixels on the solid state detector array enables suitable binning and other manipulations leading to highly accurate results. Novel methods of assays and diagnosis such as cancer diagnosis employ the reader in detecting a set of markers related to the disease, for instance ovarian cancer.

Abstract:
A method of mounting a volume from a tape medium on a tape drive apparatus. The method reads a bar-code indicating the volume from a tape cartridge, attaches the tape cartridge to a tape drive, and detects the current track position on the basis of a longitudinal track. The method then determines whether a beginning volume label or a last used area volume label is nearer to the current track position, reads the nearer volume label from the tape medium, confirms the volume by comparing the nearer volume label with the bar-code, and mounts the volume onto the tape drive.
Abstract:
Video signal processing apparatus in which at least two input video signals are combined in proportions determined by a pixel key signal to generate an output video signal for compression, at least one of the input video signals each having respective associated compression parameters from a data compression process applied to that video signal. The apparatus functions to estimate the quantity of data which will be produced by compression of a current image of the output video signal, compares the detected quantify of data with a target quantity of data, to determine whether a data overflow is expected, and in the event that a data overflow is expected, determine which blocks of the output video signal can be compressed by re-using compression parameters from corresponding block of one of the input video signals.
Abstract:
A door safety device including a cover for a gap at a hinge side of a door and door frame combination. The cover includes a strip of a rigid material that is flexible about its major axis. The strip has attachment members at its long edges whereby each edge may be secured respectively to the door and door frame. The attachment members are arranged such that one edge of the strip is firmly fixed to one of the door and door frame combination and the other edge is fixed to the other member of the combination in a way that allows some vertical movement of that edge. The strip is formed with rigid portions and longitudinally directed fold areas such that part of the cover may be supported against a vertical edge of the door when the door is in an open condition. The safety cover can be fitted to doors either a coventional or a rising-butt type of hinge and it can prevent a child's hand from being inserted into the gap and thus being at risk of injury.
Abstract:
The subject invention relates to a novel gene referred to herein as DSM-2. This gene was identified in Sterptomyces coelicolor A3. The DSM-2 protein is distantly related to PAT and BAR. The subject invention also provides plant-optimized genes encoding DSM-2 proteins, DSM-2 can be used as a transgenic trait to impart tolerance in plants and plant cells to the herbicides glufosinate and bialaphos. One preferred use of the subject genes are as selectable markers. The use of this gene as a selectable marker in a bacterial system can increase efficiency for plant transformations. Use of DSM-2 as the sole selection marker eliminates the need for an additional medicinal antibiotic marker (such as ampicillin resistance) during cloning. Various other uses are also possible according to the subject invention.
