Abstract: A fuel contamination detection system includes a fuel quality analyzer, a multiway valve, and a controller. The multiway valve includes a first inlet, a second inlet, and an outlet. The multiway valve also may include a switching device. The controller is electrically coupled to the analyzer. The controller may be coupled to the switching device, if present. Fuel is flowed through the fuel quality analyzer and an output current is measured to determine whether the fuel includes impurities. The controller is operable to signal a fuel dispensing system to dispense fuel if the fuel is sufficiently clean or cease dispensing fuel if the fuel is impure.

Abstract: A heat pipe cooled nuclear reactor core (“reactor core”) includes an array of fuel, an array of primary heat rejection heat pipes, and an array of moderator cooling heat pipes or thermosiphons. Each moderator cooling heat pipe in the array of moderator cooling heat pipes is surrounded by metal hydride moderator materials, slowing neutrons from a fission energy range to a lower energy range in the reactor core.

Abstract: Examples of air treatment systems for use in neutralizing airborne pathogens are disclosed herein. The air treatment systems comprise a housing, an air moving device, and one or more sources of ultraviolet light. An airflow may be directed through the enclosure by the air moving device and exposed to the ultraviolet light sources disposed within the enclosure. In some examples, the air treatment systems include one or more baffles disposed within the enclosure to disrupt the linear flow of air through the enclosure and cause more uniform exposure to the ultraviolet light emitted by the sources of ultraviolet light. Some examples may also include one or more air filters for removing particulate matter.

Abstract: A method for forming an annular heat pipe wick in a controlled atmosphere includes wrapping a plurality of layers of a fine mesh screen around a mandrel to form a wick. The method also includes inserting the mandrel and the wick into a sheath, and compressing the wick between the sheath and the mandrel to form an assembly. The compressing of the wick comprises applying pressure to an exterior of the mandrel and the sheath. The method further includes diffusion bonding the assembly at a temperature sufficiently high achieving self-diffusion of the plurality of layers of the fine mesh screen used to form the wick to themselves. The method also includes cooling the diffusion bonded assembly to room temperature, and etching the mandrel and sheath from the diffusion bonded assembly, leaving the wick as a porous tube.

In addition, the composition and sample preparation conditions may facilitate enhanced detection and identification of the analyte using e.g., Surface Enhanced Raman Spectrometry (SERS).

A data framing technique may include a transmitter sending a data stream including repeating bits in alternating forward and reverse order. In at least some instances, once the receiver validates the data stream, the receiver may accept payload accompanying the data stream.

Abstract: The compositions and methods described herein are topically applied to the skin with negligible or no skin irritation and can direct or prevent transport through the skin. The compositions contain neat ionic liquids, optionally in combination with a drug to be delivered. In a preferred embodiment, the compositions increase transdermal transport of the drug to be delivered. In some embodiments, the compositions disrupt bacterial biofilms. This is particularly beneficial in the treatment of antibiotic resistant skin infections. In other embodiments, the compositions direct delivery within the skin. In still other embodiments, the compositions prevent transfer of substances through the stratum corneum. The disclosed compositions and methods can be tuned and modified such that they can be used to treat or prevent a variety of different diseases and disorders.
