摘要: A medical device for photodynamically treating cancerous tissue, such as prostate cancer, comprising a body, a needle extendable from the body and at least one light-emitting (e.g., laser) diode mounted on the needle. The body is sized and configured for introduction into the urethra of a patient. The needle is movable between a retracted position housed substantially within the cylindrical body, and a deployed position in which the needle extends from the cylindrical body to enable it to penetrate into prostate tissue. The light-emitting diode is adapted to emit light to activate a photosensitizing agent (e.g., porfimer sodium) in or adjacent cancerous tissue in the prostate. Methods of treating cancer and other embodiments of medical devices for cancer treatment are also disclosed.

摘要: This invention provides a system for providing heat to a substrate in an alternating magnetic field using lossy heating particles. This invention in particular discloses an article which is a combination of a base material and lossy heating particles capable of producing the desired heat and capable of being self-regulating at a preselected Curie temperature when subjected to an alternating magnetic field. The article of this invention is adapted to be placed on a substrate in order to heat the substrate in an alternating magnetic field and is adapted to provide the removal of the particles from the substrate after the heating is completed. Preferred materials for the article of this invention are gel materials having a cone penetration of at least about 50(10.sup.-1 mm) and at least about 100% elongation. Preferred magnetic particles for use in this invention include the combination of lossy heating particles, alone or in combination with nonlossy particles for maintaining the magnetic circuit coupling while the lossy heating particles are at the Curie temperature.

摘要: This invention provides a method for soldering using induction heating, which is accomplished by the use of lossy heating particles in or on the solder. The method of this invention provides direct heating of the solder itself through induction heating of the magnetic particles in an alternating magnetic field. The magnetic particles useful in this invention can be ferromagnetic particles or ferrimagnetic particles, preferably ferrites, which have a Curie temperature at least equal to the flow temperature of the solder. Selection of the magnetic lossy heating particles with the appropriate Curie temperature for the system in which the particles are being used provides a system in which the temperature is self-regulating when the alternating magnetic field is applied. This self-regulation feature prevents overheating of the solder in the articles being soldered. The invention also discloses the selection of particles with surface properties whereby the particles can either be wetted by the solder and remain in the solder when the solder flows or it can be nonwettable by the solder whereby the particles separate from the solder when the solder flows. The surface properties can also be provided by coatings on the particles. This invention also discloses solder compositions comprising solder and lossy heating particles which produce the desired heat in an alternating magnetic field. The invention also provides systems and assemblies for the use of the above method and composition.

摘要: A transurethral needle ablation device for use by a human hand to treat the prostate of a human male. The device includes a cartridge assembly having an elongate probe member and a stylet. The elongate probe member has proximal and distal extremities and is provided with a passageway extending from the proximal extremity to the distal extremity. The stylet is slidably mounted in the passageway of the elongate probe member. A housing is included in the device. The cartridge assembly is removably mountable on the housing. An assembly adapted for actuation by the human hand is carried by the housing and coupled to the proximal extremity of the stylet for causing the distal extremity of the stylet to extend into the tissue of the prostate.

摘要: Vehicle lighting system consisting of a vehicle with an integral light source powered either internally by an on-board energy source such as a rechargeable capacitor or a battery. In another embodiment the light source may be powered by an external energy source such as electrical conductors that may be integral with a track. The light source in the vehicle interacts with features on the track. The track acts as a light reflecting and emitting medium so that it accepts the light transmitted from the vehicle, redirects the light rays and emits the light rays in the direction desired. These light rays can be continuous in nature and output or can be discontinuous. The discontinuous feature gives the impression of a pulsing light and this pulsing light is proportional to the vehicle's speed. This particular lighting system and track interaction can be used for children's toys or even larger full scale vehicle systems where it might be desirable to actually be able to track the vehicle and determine the speed of the vehicle from an outside observer.
