    摘要: A complex geographical edge finishing system includes a fixture that holds an external part having a complex three-dimensional edge, a track disposed around the fixture and surrounding the edge of the part held in the fixture, and one or more finishing apparatuses that can sand, polish, buff, paint and/or apply coatings to the complex three-dimensional edge. The finishing apparatuses move about the track such that the three-dimensional edge of the part can be polished. The path of the track can substantially match, mimic or otherwise correspond to the path of the three-dimensional edge, such that special requirements for the finishing apparatuses are not required.

    摘要: A method and an apparatus for polishing a curved edge of a molded part. A surface of the curved edge is abraded by contacting a polishing surface of a first polishing wheel to the curved edge repeatedly in a first direction concurrent with a rotational spinning direction of the first polishing wheel. The abraded surface of the curved edge is polished by contacting a polishing surface of a second polishing wheel to the curved edge in the first direction and in a second direction opposite to the first direction. The polishing surfaces of the first and second polishing wheels are shaped to conform to a portion of the surface of the curved edge of the molded part. The polishing wheel is maintained at a constant rotational speed by a controller when contacting the curved edge. The polished surface of the curved edge is visually smoothly uniform in reflective appearance.

    摘要: A method and an apparatus for shaping an edge at a juncture of two adjoining surfaces of a part. A first surface and a second surface of the part are abraded by contacting a polishing surface of a polishing wheel to the first surface and to the second surface. The polishing surface spins in opposite rotational directions about an axis parallel to the edge when contacting the first and second surfaces respectively. The polishing surface moves at different translational speeds and the polishing wheel spins at different rotational speeds along straight segments and along curved segments of the edge. The shaped edge has a visually smooth and geometrically uniform appearance.

    摘要: Methods and systems for masking interior surfaces of a part from exposure to a subsequent process. In some embodiments the interior surfaces are threaded. Methods include forming a plugged insert by overmolding a masking plug material into an opening in the insert, the plug being substantially impervious to exposure to a subsequent process. The plugged insert can then be assembled in the part and the part is exposed to the process. Processes can include anodizing, cleaning, machining and laser etch processes. After the process is complete, the plug is removed from the insert, leaving the insert in the part without the plug. The described embodiments describe methods for optimizing masking methods in a production setting. More specifically, embodiments describe methods for automatic insertion and removal of plugs in a part before and after exposure of the part to a process such as anodization.

    摘要: A CNC system can include a cylinder adapted to rotate about, travel along, and deliver a force in an axial direction, an extension coupled to a distal end of and extending outward from the elongated component in a direction perpendicular to the axial direction, and a removable fixture adapted to receive the axial force and to be moved and positioned thereby along a plane (i.e., two directions) substantially perpendicular to the axial direction. The fixture has a central opening along the first direction adapted to receive the elongated component, and includes external features adapted to guide manufacturing operations for other manufacturing components. Chamfers on both the extension and removable fixture convert the downward axial force into a plurality of lateral forces that move the fixture against a receiver base. Datums located at guide holes in the fixture stop such lateral movement when the movement causes them to contact guide pins coupled to the receiver base.
