A light emitting diode (LED) night vision imaging system (NVIS) lens apparatus for use in filtering of a plurality of night-mode LEDs is provided. The lens apparatus includes an optical carrier material having a plurality of apertures disposed and arranged such that, when the lens apparatus is coupled to an LED backlight, each of the plurality of apertures allows light from a corresponding day-mode LED to be transmitted therethrough without filtering. The lens apparatus also includes filter material coupled to and supported by the optical carrier material. The filter material is disposed and arranged on the optical carrier material such that, when the lens apparatus is coupled to the LED backlight, light from each of a plurality of night-mode LEDs is filtered by the filter material. Backlight assemblies and displays are also provided.

A system and method are disclosed employing a dielectric mirror layer, highly reflective at wavelengths below a cut off but highly transparent at wavelengths above the cut off, is placed within a display assembly. This dielectric mirror layer creates a very efficient reflecting cavity for a portion of a Light Emitting Diode (LED) pumping spectrum. Accurate dielectric filter tuning allows an increased portion of the pumping spectrum to be converted to desired wavelength spectrum and also raise the luminance ratio of the display to a useful value for display applications. Variable and active tuning of the cut off wavelength value functions to optimize system performance.

A flexible filter for use in filtering wavelengths of light that interfere with night vision awareness systems is disclosed. A filtering material is applied to a first flexible film in a substantially liquid form and is cured thereto using ultraviolet light. The filtering material filters wavelengths of light between about 610 and 930 nanometers when cured. A second flexible film is temporarily held in place by a support member. The second flexible film is applied to the cured filtering material and is fused thereto using a combination of increased temperature and pressure for a predetermined time. The first and second flexible films are made of polyurethane.

The process may include pressurizing a first sealed cavity to a first pressure. The process may further include creating a vacuum within a second sealed cavity, the second sealed cavity being sealed from the first sealed cavity by a flexible membrane. The process may further include applying the first pressure to a laminate assembly stack via the flexible membrane, the laminate assembly stack including a first substrate, a second substrate, and a PSA layer, the PSA layer being positioned between the first substrate and the second substrate. The process may further include applying the vacuum created within the second sealed cavity to the laminate assembly stack. The applied first pressure and the applied vacuum promote intimate contact between the first substrate and the second substrate of the laminate assembly stack via the PSA layer.
