A method for forming an optical element having a microstructure includes the steps of: providing a mold (30) having a pattern; disposing an optical perform (40) adjacent the mold with a portion thereof facing toward the predetermined pattern of the mold; heating the optical preform up to a predetermined temperature; hydrostatically pressing the mold onto the optical preform such that a to-be-processed portion of the optical preform is formed into the predetermined microstructure; and removing the mold from the treated optical preform to obtain the optical element. A hydrostatic pressing apparatus (55) is utilized to provide a uniform pressure applied to the mold. This ensures that the formed microstructure of optical elements having a high precision. In addition, the infrared quartz heaters are capable of instantly elevating the temperature of the optical preform. Thus, the whole process may be finished in a relatively short time.

A powder pressing apparatus comprises an upper punch and a lower punch for compression of a powder in a cavity formed in a through hole of a die. A gap between a side surface of the lower punch and a side surface of the through hole of the die is sealed by a sealing member. A lubricant is supplied with a gas from a nozzle in the side surface of the lower punch to the side surface of the through hole, and the lubricant applied to the side surface of the through hole is spread by an absorbing member. The cavity is filled with the powder while the cavity is under suction by a reduced pressure provided from the nozzle in the side surface of the lower punch. During the suction, a filtering member provides filtration for the lower punch not to draw the powder in.

An improved method of imprint lithography involves using direct fluid pressure to press the mold into a substrate-supported film. Advantageously the mold and/or substrate are sufficiently flexible to provide wide area contact under the fluid pressure. Fluid pressing can be accomplished by sealing the mold against the film and disposing the resulting assembly in a pressurized chamber. It can also be accomplished by subjecting the mold to jets of pressurized fluid. The result of this fluid pressing is enhanced resolution and high uniformity over an enlarged area.

A method and apparatus for forming and consolidating organic matrix composites. An organic matrix composite panel comprising laid-up prepregs is placed between sheets of a susceptor material that is susceptible to inductive heating to form a workpiece. The resulting workpiece is placed within upper and lower dies formed of a material that is not susceptible to inductive heating. An induction coil embedded within the dies is energized and inductively heats the susceptor sheets surrounding the panel. The sheets in turn conductively heat the organic matrix composite panel. A pressure zone between the workpiece and one of the dies is pressurized to form the workpiece to the contour of a forming surface on one of the dies. The pressure in the pressure zone is maintained on the workpiece until the organic matrix composite panel is fully consolidated and formed.

A fixed coil induction heater produces quality thermoplastic fusion welds in prefabricated resin composite parts. A susceptor along a bondline between parts aligns with the induction coil segments of a solenoid induction coil along the centerline of the coil. Energizing the coil heats the susceptor to form the weld at the bondline. For this operation, our induction heating workcell uses complementary dies that define a central cavity with an oval pattern of induction coil segments roughly conforming to the shape of the cavity and surrounding all faces of the cavity where we position the preform composite parts and susceptor.

Apparatus and method for superplastic forming. The workpiece is held between a pair of dies that are electrically and thermally nonconductive, and is heated inductively by a coil embedded within the dies. The dies are formed of a material that is substantially transparent to inductive heating. A plurality of electrical conductors are embedded within the die. The electrical conductors are interconnected into one or more electrically conductive coils that surround the workpiece. The electrical conductors are used to produce a time varying magnetic field that is used to heat the workpiece. In one embodiment, the workpiece is a composite material that is susceptible to inductive heating. The composite material includes an electrically conductive material. The time varying magnetic field heats the electrical conductive material, thereby heating the workpiece. The die also includes a forming surface having a shape corresponding to a desired shape of the workpiece. A pressure differential is created between the first and second sides of the workpiece to deform the workpiece to the shape of the forming surface.

The present invention is a process for performing a planarization treatment of pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA). The process includes positioning a first substrate onto a support surface of a planarization tool. The process further includes placing at least one layer of PSA onto the first substrate. The process further includes positioning a second substrate onto the layer(s) of PSA. The process further includes applying a pressure to the second substrate via a flexible membrane, said pressure being applied in a generally uniform, unidirectional and localized manner. Further, the applied pressure flattens the PSA between the first substrate and the second substrate for promoting suitability of the PSA for use in rigid-to-rigid lamination processes.
