Abstract:
There is disclosed a transducer with an integral switch for wireless electronics. Essentially, the transducer contains a housing which includes a sensor device. The sensor device may be a piezoresistive Wheatstone bridge arranged in a conventional manner. The output of the bridge is coupled to a typical amplifying circuit or an analog-to-digital converter whose signal is coupled to a suitable transmitting means. The signal provided by the Wheatstone bridge is transmitted through RF, infrared or some other wireless transmission scheme to a remote location. Such transmissions schemes are well known. Associated with the sensor and secured to the sensor housing, is a push button switch which is wired in series with a battery. The battery operates to energize the sensor, including all the electronics when the sensor is in placed in a pressure sensing position. When the pressure is placed in a pressure sensing position, the push button switch, is actuated to apply operating bias to the transducer device.
Abstract:
The present invention pertains to a solid dosage form comprising an analgesically effective amount of opioid analgesic and an opioid abuse-deterring amount of a nontoxic N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor antagonist contained in a carrier which isolates, or separates, the antagonist from the opioid analgesic. The nontoxic N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor antagonist is released and made available only when the dosage form is misused, as would be the case when the dosage form is crushed or dissolved and thereafter administered in a manner other than that indicated, e.g., by injection or intranasally.
Abstract:

Abstract:
A balanced heat coil protector protects telecommunications equipment from excessive sneak currents through a telecommunications circuit having a ring conductor and a tip conductor. An electrically conductive grounding pin is supported within and extends through the base for providing a path to ground potential. A first electrically conductive line pin and a first electrically conductive central office pin are supported in the base and extend therethrough, the first line pin and first central office pin being electrically connected to each other by a first conductive wire to provide a normal circuit current path from the first line pin to the first central office pin. A second electrically conductive line pin and a second electrically conductive central office pin are also supported in the base and extend therethrough, the second line pin and second central office pin being electrically connected to each other by a second conductive wire to provide a normal circuit current path from the second line pin to the second central office pin. A sleeve having electrically conductive flanged end portions is supported in an initial position within the housing on the grounding pin by a fusible material and is disposed above at least one of the first line and central office pins and at least one of the second line and central office pins, and the first and second conductive wires are wound about an outer surface of the sleeve. The fusible material melts in response to an excessive sneak current in either the ring or tip conductors causing the sleeve to move from the initial position to a grounding position in contact with at least one of the first line and central office pins and at least one of the second line and central office pins to simultaneously ground the ring and tip conductors.
Abstract:
A process for etching of silicon oxide/nitride such as silicon dioxide, silicon nitride or oxynitride. The process includes etching a silicon oxide/nitride layer to expose an underlying electrically conductive layer and provide a via extending through the silicon oxide/nitride layer to the electrically conductive layer. The etching is performed by exposing the silicon oxide/nitride layer to an etching gas in an ionized state in a reaction chamber of a plasma generating device. The etching gas includes a fluoride-containing gas and a passivating gas which is present in an amount effective to suppress sputtering of the electrically conductive layer when it is exposed to the etching gas during the etching step. The passivating gas can be nitrogen gas and the fluoride-containing gas can be CF.sub.4, CHF.sub.3, C.sub.2 F.sub.6, CH.sub.2 F.sub.2, SF.sub.6, other Freons and mixtures thereof. The etching gas can also include a carrier gas such as Ar, He, Ne, Kr or mixtures thereof. The etching can be reactive ion etching or plasma etching and the etching gas can be exposed to a microwave electric field and/or a magnetic field during the etching step. The etching gas can achieve 350% overetching while preventing sputtering of the electrically conductive layer which can be Al, Al alloys, Ti, TiN, TiW and Mo.
Abstract:
An interferometric procedure, such as electronic speckle pattern interferometry, involves generating two signals representing the point-by-point variations in intensity of respective patterns of electromagnetic radiation resulting from the interference of first and second beams of such radiation derived from a coherent source, with at least the first beam from each pattern being scattered, before interference with its respective second beam, from a common object surface, and with a corresponding pair of the beams, one for each pattern, having a predetermined relative phase difference of other than a multiple of .pi.; and determining from the two signals values for a datum phase of the radiation at the object surface. Preferably, as a preliminary to this last determination. DC components are removed from the two signals. Conveniently, to simplify the determination, the phase difference is an odd multiple of .pi./4 or .pi./2.

A communication system may include a first control circuit to detect a break on a first optical link; a first optical source to supply a first optical signal on a second optical link in response to detecting the break on the first optical link, the first optical signal propagating in a first direction on the second optical link; a second control circuit to detect a presence of the first optical signal on the second optical link, and output a control signal in response to detecting the presence of the first optical signal; and a second optical source to supply a second optical signal on the second optical link, the second optical signal propagating in a second direction opposite the first direction, where the Raman pump is disabled in response to the control signal.
Abstract:
A method of verifying the integrity of a seal in a sealing region between a container and a sealing film applied to the container comprises viewing at least the sealing region to detect the presence of a detectable predetermined feature in the sealing region. The presence of the detectable predetermined feature in the sealing region is indicative of an improper seal between the container and the sealing film whilst the absence of the detectable predetermined feature in the sealing region is indicative of an integral seal between the container and the sealing film.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to an improved approach for the treatment of microbial infections in mammals. Specifically, the invention provides methods and reagents for expressing in mammalian cells proteins that have anti-microbial activity. The invention provides both genes which have been modified to allow expression and preferably secretion of active protein in desired mammalian cells or tissues, and methods of introducing such modified genes into desired mammalian cells and/or tissues. Most specifically, genes encode anti-staphylococcal proteins are delivered to mammalian cells and/or tissues by methods of gene delivery, including gene therapy and the production of transgenic animals, for the treatment of mastitis in ruminant animals.
