The image processing apparatus can include a first coding unit for coding original image data according to the fractal block coding method, an extractor for extracting error between blocks, a comparator for comparing the amount of extracted error with a predetermined value, and a second coding unit for coding error information according to a coding method different from the fractal block coding method when the error amount is greater than the predetermined value as a result of comparison.

An attribute of each picture element is determined on the basis of the aforesaid feature information. These attributes are corrected by detecting straight lines by applying a Hough transform to picture elements disposed along apparent border lines by which one attribute is divided from another, dividing the image data into a plurality of local regions by these straight lines, and determining an attribute with respect to each of the local regions. Each of the local regions is subjected to image processing in accordance with the corrected attribute.

At the time of transmission, the image data input by the scanner and stored in a work memory is converted into mail data so as to be transmitted by E-mail, and the mail data is stored again into the work memory. The mail data is divided every predetermined reference data size into divided files which are sequentially transmitted as divided mails. When completion of transmission of divided mails corresponding to a unit image is confirmed, the image data and mail data of the unit image are eliminated from the work memory. By sequentially performing such a process, the memory use efficiency can be improved while holding image data of a unit image which has not been transmitted yet.
