Nanoscale corundum powders are obtained by first producing an Al2O3 precursor by adding seed crystals to an aqueous solution of an aluminium compound and adding a base and then converting the Al2O3 precursor into corundum by calcination at a high temperature. Before the calcination, the salts that are present in addition to the Al2O3 precursor are separated off. The resulting product is calcined at temperatures of 700 to 975° C. and any fines that may be present are removed. The resulting corundum powders can be sintered at temperatures of ≦1200° C. to produce compacts or components of multiple layer systems.

A method for producing a ceramic coating of metallic and/or ceramic surfaces and products in reactors, process plants and combustion plants includes applying a mixture of fine-particle boron nitride, at least one inorganic binding agent of medium particle size in the nanometer range, containing substantially Al2O3, AlO(OH), ZrO2, Y—ZrO2, TiO2, Fe2O3 and/or SnO2 or an associated precursor compound and at least one solvent and/or water onto a metallic and/or ceramic surfaces or product, and burning the applied mixture into a coating through heating.

Suspensions and powders based on indium tin oxide are prepared by a method in which indium tin oxide precursors are precipitated from solutions in one or more solvents in the presence of one or more surface-modifying components, the solvent(s) are removed from the precipitate, which is then calcined, one or more surface-modifying components and one or more solvents are added, the mixture is comminuted or dispersed to form a suspension, and the liquid components are separated from the suspension to give a powder. The powder may be converted into a moulding by a shaping process. The materials prepared by this method are especially suitable as coating materials for use in microelectronics and optoelectronics.

The inorganic binder system contains at least one ceramic nanoparticle of a particle size of less than 100 nm, preferably less than 50 nm and particularly preferred less than 25 nm, the solvent being water. Layers produced in this fashion are suited as self-cleaning catalytically active layers e.g. in ovens, in combustion engines etc. or for general coating of substances to considerably increase their specific surface e.g. for catalytic substrates.
